Gaerke named MVP as Fort wins 2 (10/02/06)

CONVOY, Ohio - The trip to the Crestview Invitational was like 2004 and 2005 rolled into one for the Indians.

Two seasons ago Tiff Gaerke earned tournament MVP honors, and last season the Fort Recovery volleyball team defeated a pair of state-ranked foes for the first time all year. Saturday, the Tribe did both.

Gaerke earned her second career MVP award at Crestview, and the Indians went 2-1 with wins over Division II No. 5 Ottawa-Glandorf (22-25, 25-18, 25-19) and Division IV No. 2 Old Fort (25-23, 25-21). The lone loss for Fort Recovery came by a 20-25, 26-24, 25-18 score to Division IV No. 10 St. Paul.

Fort Recovery was 0-5 against state-ranked competition prior to its trip to Crestview, including a 25-23, 25-23 loss to Old Fort.

Gaerke's MVP honor came on the power of 60 kills, including 23 in the victory over Ottawa Glandorf. She also was second for in the Indians in digs (25), blocks (5) and aces (two) while adding nine points and one assist.

Vicki Roessner led the Tribe with 29 digs, including 11 versus Ottawa-Glandorf. She also had a team-high 20 points, with eight coming in the win over Old Fort.

Abby Niekamp had 38 of her 94 assists on the day against Ottawa-Glandorf, and also led the way with six blocks. Brittany Brackman and Joanna Snyder each finished with 14 points and three aces, and Kinsey Wenning followed Gaerke with 21 kills.

The Indians will host Jay County Tuesday at 6 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
