Gaerke starts for UD

Collegiate Check-up

Tiff Gaerke made the most of her opportunity Saturday.
Getting her first start of the season, the 2007 Fort Recovery High School graduate finished second on the team in kills to help lead the NCAA Division I No. 18 University of Dayton volleyball team to a 25-12, 25-16, 25-7 victory over La Salle.
Gaerke racked up a season-high nine kills and also came up with six digs in the three-game victory for the Flyers (15-3). She also had one block.
The senior totaled three kills and two blocks Friday as Dayton rolled over Temple in three games.
For the season, Gaerke has 28 kills, 16 digs, seven blocks and two aces.

Amanda Johnson
Jay County – 2008
Turned in another top-10 finish for the NAIA No. 13 Indiana Wesleyan University women’s cross country team Friday as it won the Bethel College Invitational.
Johnson was the No. 4 runner in the 5K for the Wildcats, who put all of their seven athletes in the top 20. She crossed the finish line in 19 minutes, 19 seconds, just one second behind teammate Cassidy Wagner.
IWU won the seven-team event with 39 points while Hope was second with 71.

Sam Heckard
South Adams – 2010
Also competed in the Bethel Invitational, helping his host Pilots to an fifth-place finish in the men’s competition.
Heckard was the No. 5 runner for Bethel and finished 53rd overall. He posted a time of 29 minutes, 40 seconds in the 8K race.

Maddie Moore
South Adams – 2009
Tallied one of the goals Saturday for the Bluffton University women’s soccer team in a 4-0 shutout of Anderson.
Moore connected on her only shot on goal, scoring the Beavers’ third goal of the game in the 54th minute. She hit her shot from 20 yards out off of an assist from Megan Moreo.
The sophomore also attempted four shots, two of which were on goal, as Bluffton tied Cincinnati Christian 0-0 on Tuesday.

Aaron Daniels
Jay County – 2008
Made his first career tackle Saturday during the Franklin College football team’s 56-17 victory over Rose-Hulman.
Daniels made the stop in the fourth quarter, tackling Reed Eason after a six-yard reception. The junior plays defensive back for the Grizzlies, who are now 5-1.

Frank Thien
Fort Recovery – 2009
Saw playing time for the NCAA Division III No. 13 Ohio Northern University football team Saturday in its 44-10 blowout of Capital.
Thien plays wide receiver for the Polar Bears, who are now 4-1.[[In-content Ad]]
