Game helped forge friendships
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Sept. 6 provided a tremendous opportunity for the people of Jay County to demonstrate the true meaning of Patriot Pride! The Jay County High School athletics department would like to extend its appreciation to all who assisted in making the varsity football game with Wallaceburg, Ontario, Canada, a tremendous success.
Buffalo Wings and Rings, Old National Bank, and Pak-A-Sak provided tickets to local fans while FCC provided tickets to its employees. Rob Weaver and WPGW helped promote the ticket giveaway and game by providing information during newscasts and Jay sports notes each day. Dave Hull and Ponderosa assisted in providing a great facility and food for the Wallaceburg coaches and players following their Thursday evening practice.
Dr. Tim Long, Brad DeRome and Principal Phil Ford greeted our guests prior to the Thursday meal. Jay County High School teachers opened their classrooms to the Tartan football players and coaches Friday.
The Jay County Schools Maintenance Department adapted the scoreboard in order to display both the American and Canadian Flags while Abby Muhlenkamp amazed the crowd with her pre-game performance of both national anthems. Kelly Smeltzer and the Marching Patriots welcomed our guests while also entertaining the home crowd with their usual excellent pre-game and halftime performances.
The Jay Schools Food Service adjusted regular procedures to accommodate our guests for lunch as well as making homemade pizza, which was served to both teams following the game complimented by food and desert provided by the football parents. Jay County fans showed up en masse to cheer on the Patriots and witness the true meaning of educationally-based athletics on the field.
Although the record book will simply note a 12-7 victory for the Patriots, the experience nurtured new friendships among Jay County and Wallaceburg students while showing our visitors from the north genuine Jay County hospitality.
Friday was truly a great day to be a Patriot!
