Garden filling up

Jay County Hospital Board

The Neighbor's Garden is nearly full.

Jay County Hospital CEO Joe Johnston updated the Jay County Hospital Board on the status of the community gardening project starting this spring behind the hospital.

"We're up to 47 plots spoken for," he said of the garden's 56 available spaces.

The garden is kicking off its inaugural season and the response in the first year, Johnston said, has been outstanding. The project originally stemmed from the Jay County Hospital Foundation and board member John Young and has been a collaborative effort of many agencies - including the hospital, Purdue Cooperative Extension, Jay County FFA and the Helping Hand Food Bank among others.

Portland resident Dale Widman will be leading the effort as the garden's coordinator and will be helped by nine "mentors" to aid gardeners, many of which are "first timers," Johnston said.

Although the crops grown can be eaten by their growers, Johnston said it appears that "a significant amount of the crop will go to the food bank" as donations.

"Nobody knew how well it would go," said board president David Littler, pleased with the response. "We all owe a round of applause to John Young and his committee."

In other business Wednesday evening, the hospital board:

•Heard the auxiliary report from president Marilyn Post. A total of 67 volunteers donated 1,117.5 hours of work in March.

•Heard the financial report from chief financial officer Don Michael. During March, the hospital had a net income of $1,091,378. The hospital received more than $900,000 in Medicare payments from the federal government.

•Approved contracts with GLA Collection Company and IMC Credit Services to perform collection services.

•Approved 1,091 checks and disbursements totaling $2,274,052.68.

•Approved purchase of five crash carts from Armstrong Medical at a cost of $9,758 to replace 25 year-old carts.

•Approved six reappointments to the active and courtesy staff.

•Approved two changes to the medical staff rules and regulations including CPR responsibilities and a name change of the Close Observation Unit to Special Care Unit.

•Approved the performance improvement plan for 2010.

•Were informed that about 900 people attended the spring health fair at Jay County High School earlier this month. A total of 545 blood draws were taken and 295 volunteer hours were worked.[[In-content Ad]]
