Geneva budget is OK'd (09/06/06)
Geneva Town Council
By By MARY ANN LEWIS-
GENEVA - Council members here approved on third reading a 2007 budget that is slightly less than the 2006 budget.
"This is the official hearing on the budget," clerk-treasurer, Doug Milligan, said as he asked whether anyone wanted to ask questions or make comments.
The budget totals $837,217 as compared to $839,233 for 2006, Milligan explained. The budget also includes a 3 percent increase in wages for the town's employees.
The council will officially adopt the budget during a special meeting on Sept. 15, at 5 p.m. at the town hall.
Also Tuesday night, the council approved hiring Wesley Haight as a deputy town marshal.
Haight, who has experience as a reserve officer, is currently employed as a jail officer at the Adams County Jail in Decatur and is expected to begin working for Geneva in two weeks. He replaces Curt VanOver, who resigned to take a position as an officer in Andrews, Ind.
Council Tuesday night also agreed to look at a drainage problem near the home of town marshal Rob Johnson on North Drive near Wabash Valley Golf Club.
Johnson explained when there is a heavy rain, water runs in the crawl space beneath his home and across the drive of his neighbor.
Council members Lew Wingler and Jim Timmons agreed to see if water running off the golf course is the source of the problem and what could be done to alleviate the problem. Councilman Mike Schwartz was not present at Tuesday's meeting.
Also the council learned from town manager, Steve Hampshire, that fall clean-up is set for Saturday, Sept. 23, from 8 a.m. to noon.
Council also approved placing an original street light from 1925 in the park next to the town hall on Line Street.
Hampshire said the light "is ready to go up," and will be put in place by town employees.
Milligan encouraged all Geneva residents to submit letters of support for the renovation of the fire department.
Council members met recently and agreed to submit a $50,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) planning grant application to the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs, and that letters of support would help toward approval of the request.
Residents should submit handwritten letters to the town hall by Friday, he said.
Milligan also told council members that he is looking at other health insurance coverage plans for town employees.
In the last four years the cost of such coverage has increased 77 percent, he said. Six town employees on the single plan pay $1 per year for medical health insurance. There are no employees covered under a family plan.
"Especially with a very small group it's hard to do," Milligan said about receiving acceptable health insurance coverage costs.
Additionally Tuesday night, Hampshire reminded residents that part of Clark Street will be closed on Sept. 30 for an auction sale.[[In-content Ad]]
