Geneva to try for grant again (9/1/04)
GENEVA — Town officials here held a public hearing Tuesday for a second try for a $485,000 state grant to help fund a sewer project.
About 17 town officials and residents attended the hearing to discuss the approximately $621,000 project, which will alleviate drainage problems for residents living on Winchester Road in Geneva by adding a new sewer line.
Jerry Bridges, an independent grant administrator from Anderson who is working on the grant application, said Indiana Department of Commerce officials suggested the town increase its local match by $25,000 to $136,000. These funds will be taken from the town’s street department fund, cumulative capital, county economic development income tax and general funds, Bridges said.
The town’s first request for the DOC grant was denied in early June. Bridges and town council members met recently with officials from DOC to hear their suggestions for improving the town’s second grant application.
Friday is the deadline for the town to submit its new application to the state.
The project is slated to begin at the intersection of Winchester Road and Spring Street and travel south on Winchester Road. The sewer line then will travel west on Harrison Street to Richfield Lane. It then will curve southwest on Richfield Lane, travel around Brenda Stump’s property, located at 206 Richfield Lane, and continue south under West Line Street, where it will connect with a proposed open drain and an existing storm drain tile.
Spring Street resident Elanor Morris requested more information on the changes the project would have on her street. She informed council members there was a ditch created on the north side of Spring Street that has repeatedly caused flooding of their crawl space for several years.
Council members said they would look into the problems with the ditch and attempt to remedy the issue while the town waits to start the project.
This round of state grants will be awarded in November.
Also Tuesday, council members Jim Timmons, Mike Schwartz and Lew Wingler approved a resolution authorizing the grant application submission and the town’s commitment of a local match.[[In-content Ad]]
