Girls teams stay perfect as EJ, Fort battle (01/18/05)
PORTLAND — Both opposition squads came close, but neither perfect team was going to be denied when Fort Recovery visited East Jay Monday.
The host Chiefs stayed undefeated at 7-0 with a 33-27 win in the seventh grade game.
The Indians’ eighth grade team also remained unbeaten with a 24-22 victory.
Both offenses went wild in the fourth quarter of the eighth grade game after going at it in a relatively low-scoring affair in the first three.
After scoring just one third-quarter point and nine in the game, Fort Recovery put up 18 points in the fourth period to try for the comeback.
But, East Jay protected its lead with 16 points of its own for the victory.
Lindsey Wellman took care of most of the Chief scoring, racking up 23 points. Pazia Speed had six, and Becky Muhlenkamp scored the other four.
Emily May and Chelsey Leuthold shared the team high for the Tribe (7-2) with seven points apiece. Nicole Pottkotter added six points.
Defense tightened up in the second half of the eighth grade game, with both teams scoring seven points after the break. The Indians led 17-15 at the half, watched the advantage slip to one point at the end of the third quarter and then held East Jay to two points in the final period to survive for the win.
Kinsey Wenning led Fort Recovery to its 9-0 mark with nine points. Anne Koesters had six points, and Kelly Thien scored four.
Kaelee Keller scored nine points as the Chiefs dropped to 3-3.
Brittany Mann added seven points.[[In-content Ad]]
