Give a welcome to all
Editorial
Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Association officers say they've received a surprising number of inquiries this summer from folks who will be coming to the Tri-State show for the very first time.
It's the 44th gathering, but for many it will be the first.
That's a reminder to all of us that not only will the county be playing host to familiar friends, it will have plenty of newcomers as well.
In practical terms, that translates into more people who may be in need of assistance, directions, or a helping hand.
It also means we need to be patient if traffic becomes snarled or visitors can't find their way.
On Sunday, the third annual Welcome Home to Portland Festival aims to set the right tone for hospitality, beginning with a parade from the fairgrounds to the Jay County Courthouse beginning at 4:30 p.m.
A big turnout would be a great way to kick off this year's show. The event will continued from 5 to 7 p.m. around the courthouse.
But hospitality isn't a one-shot deal, and visitors will be coming and going all next week.
So keep that in mind as we all try to be good hosts. Be patient. Keep your eyes pealed for folks who might need assistance. And keep that welcoming smile.
It's great that the Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Show is attracting new visitors; we just want to make sure that when they leave they'll already be planning their return next year. - J.R.
