Give public a vote on big expenditures (08/10/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Thank you Mr. Sanders for sorting out the Jay School Corporation fiscal financial report and, yes, the indebtedness is out of control and downright outrageous. Most of us can't imagine that much money, let alone that much debt, and no money spent by the schools is "tax neutral." What a statement. It is all paid by taxes sometime. When? By our great-grandchildren?

With the indebtedness on the books now, how are the buildings going to be repaired in the future after they have been let go so bad again? What is the matter with repairing these buildings as they need it?

When the tax rate rose just recently, we heard from friends and read in the paper about retirees who may have to sell their properties because they wouldn't be able to pay their taxes. Does anyone know how many people in Jay County are living on retirement income? It seems that would be a factor whenever tax dollars are spent.

Every time the price of anything goes up our retirement dollars get smaller. Pension dollars don't get cost of living raises. We don't want to have to sell our properties because the dollars won't stretch far enough for all the "wants" of the school board, the city or county government.

Anytime tax money is spent in large amounts, that project or undertaking should be put before the voting public in a referendum vote. Who knows, it may bring more people out to vote and may also change who gets in office.

It's time our government started living within their means so that John Q. Public can.

Health theory

To the editor:

I recently read a wonderful new book by Dr. Kenneth Bock, titled "Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma and Allergies: The Groundbreaking Program of the 4-A Disorders." As a health care provider, I am dedicated to the needs of others. I truly feel the information in this publication can help save lives and/or improve the quality of lives of our next generation.

Dr. Bock outlines a safer immunization schedule in appendix one. He encourages parents to start their children's shots at four months of age so they can build up some immunity. Other recommendations include: 1. Give the MMR as separate injections; 2. Start Hepatitis B shots shortly before child enters day care or one year before kindergarten (unless mother is Hepatitis B positive); 3. Administer vaccines only to healthy children; 4. Do not give children the flu shot that contains thimerosal; and 5. If a child has a adverse reaction to any shot, postpone further shots until the immunization system is more fully developed.

I hope all doctors, nurse practitioners and health clinic personnel get a chance to evaluate this book and incorporate some of the safer guidelines for our children.

I applaud Dr. Bock for all his years of research on this topic and admire his courage to write about his successful techniques in healing these illnesses.

Our children deserve health care providers who will make educated decisions and changes necessary for the good of our society.
