Golf carts not the only danger on the streets (09/05/06)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

In reference to the editorial of Aug. 25 about regulations on golf carts, please keep in mind the following points.

We bought our golf cart to do our business and shopping around town to save our "over the road" vehicle from short trips and also to save on gas. This has worked out very well for us.

The first thing we did was insure it and put a slow-moving vehicle sign and flags on it. We tried to license it through the BMV, but they don't do that.

Mike went to the police chief for information on their use to make sure we weren't breaking any laws. Then he put lights on it front and back to use if we happened to be out after dark.

Several of our neighbors and friends have golf carts to use for the same purpose, and all the people we see driving golf carts on a normal day are adults, mostly older people who would be on a retirement income, as we are. More than likely they have a driver's license and know the rules of the road and are looking out for their own health.

If the city wants to regulate golf carts, so be it. While we would agree to some regulations on golf carts, keep in mind there are CHILDREN riding mo-peds and four-wheelers up and down our streets and alleys at high speeds with no regard for their safety or for those who live and play there, and without a valid driver's license, no doubt.

We have not seen any reports of accidents involving golf carts, thank goodness, but we have seen reports of accidents involving mo-peds from time to time.

Thank you,

Mike and Susie Martin

Congratulations

To the editor:

On behalf of the Portland Area Chamber of Commerce, I would like to congratulate the Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Association for the success of their 41st Antique Engine and Tractor Show.

It is always one of the high points of the year when we have visitors from around the world traveling to Portland for the show. It is the chamber of commerce's objective to make our guests feel welcomed into the community.

Many tractor show visitors stop in the office and talk to others in the community, and I have heard repeatedly how much they enjoy coming to Portland.

They appreciate the friendliness of those who live and work here and frequently comment on the progress that is taking place in our community.

Thank you, Portland, for your hospitality throughout the summer as we have thousands of people coming into the community for the tractor show and other events that take place.

I would especially like to thank the following for assisting the chamber with our free trolley service to and from the fairgrounds: Bob Franks, trolley chairperson; Pat Jellison, worker coordinator; Arts Place; Affolder Implement Sales; Ken Kunkle Chevrolet-Olds-Cadillac; Pak-a-Sak; Patriot Sportswear; and all of the van drivers, trolley drivers, and hosts and those who worked in the hospitality tent.

You are all outstanding ambassadors for our community.
