Golfer gives out thanks (11/30/06)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

The purpose of this letter is to thank those who supported our son Evan this summer. Evan is a fifth grader at Judge Haynes Elementary School. He is 10-years-old and loves to play golf. Evan is a double amputee. You may have seen him play baseball, basketball, or participating on the winter swim team.

Evan now spends most of his summers playing golf. Evan traveled the Midwest this summer playing golf in tournaments sponsored by the National Amputee Golf Association. In between the tournaments, he was out at the Portland Golf Club perfecting his swing.

Evan traveled to Coopertown, Tenn., Shelbyville, Ky., Stow, Ohio, Three Rivers, Mich., Orland Park, Ill., and Circleville, Ohio. A huge thank you to Kappa Kappa Kappa sorority, Kiwanis Club, Optimist Clubs, and Delta Theta Tau for their support. Also, we would like to thank Mayor Hosier. A very big thank you to the Portland Golf Club. Thanks, Dave, for supporting Evan and making him feel at home on the golf course. Hopefully we will have an early spring so we can get out to the course and get ready for the 2007 season.

Evan will play the same circuit in 2007. Hopefully we can add a couple of tournaments. The one tournament will be the 59th annual National Amputee Championships to be held in the Chicago area in late August 2007. Evan is the only junior amputee golfer at these tournaments. It is great to see him fit right in with 50 to 75 adults. He wishes more kids would play. With scores in the low 90s, some of the adult golfers might not want him to come back. The one thing that these tournaments have done for Evan is show him that amputees are just like everybody else.

Once again, we thank all of you that supported Evan and if we left anyone out we are truly sorry. Just know by your support you are making one kid really happy.

Special man

To the editor:

Nov. 28, 2006 was a momentous day that my dad, Ralph D. Settle, wanted to see: His 100th birthday. He was deprived of the privilege because as a teenager he contracted rheumatic fever and it damaged his heart. His life was twenty some odd years short of his goal but this does not suggest that Ralph D. Settle led a unsubstantial life.

For his family he is missed and one granddaughter never knew him, but stories fly when Wayne, Eileen and I are together. The grandchildren marvel at such a character. My children are astonished when a letter in The CR mentions Mr. Settle or Doc Settle. At one point someone remarked that he was just a teacher, everyone has lots of teachers when they're in school.

Ah, but for those of us that had him, he was one of those teachers that you remember. Yes, even his children had him for a teacher at school as well as at home - I knew several physics principles before I started school because you could not open or close a gate on the farm without them - and you were reminded if you broke one of those laws.

Anyway, why do I wax so nostalgically - today would have been Dad's 100th birthday and we want to celebrate. We have established a scholarship at The Portland Foundation to be awarded to a graduate of Jay County High School planning to pursue a career in teaching.

Can you hear Dad whistling the Panther fight song as he wandered the halls or tried to get an experiment to work just right? If you can, would you please send a small check to the Portland Foundation c/o the Ralph D. and Mary A. Settle Scholarship?

You know it does not take a lot from any one of his students but if we all give just a little we can help someone planning to enter that noble profession that Ralph Denotic Settle represented so well.

Betty Drinkut, chemistry/physics teacher, Marion (Ind.) High School

Auction thanks

To the editor:

One of the largest crowds in recent years attended the 23rd annual Hoiday Benefit Auction at Arts Place, where $13,801.50 was raised to help with our annual budget. Of that amount, $500 will be placed in the Ernie Loy Memorial Ticket Fund, which will be used to subsidize student tickets to our performances.

We were very pleased with the spirit and generosity of the bidders. The success of the auction was attributable to many people, and some we would like to recognize are:

•The numerous businesses and individuals who donated sale items, door prizes and cash.

•The many volunteers who solicited the donations.

•Loy Realty & Auction, Gary Loy and staff for providing the auctioneering services.

•Brittany Wolfe, an Indianapolis Colts cheerleader from Winchester.

•Barb Freel and Lisa Barnett for preparing the delicious food; The First National Bank for sponsoring our reception; Tyson Mexican Original, Jay County Beverage, Monarch Beverage, Sharlette's Fudgery and Candies, Coca-Cola Bottling Co. and The Glass Bonsai for the generous donations to the refreshments.

•B&S Excursions and MainSource Bank for their donation of a two-night stay at French Lick Springs Resort for our raffle.

•Delta Theta Tau Sorority for all of their help.

•Wine stewards Jim Burk and Paula Fifer.

•Greeters and helpers, Jim and Julie Forcum and Becky Hinkle.

•The staff of Arts Place.

•And most importantly, the wonderful crowd who attended this year's auction. Please plan on attending next year and bringing a friend with you.

Sincerely,

Doug Loy, chairman
