Good job, guys

By To the editor:-

This is about the article in the Feb. 2 newspaper about the county’s recent road clearing.

I happen to think the county did the best job they could do under the conditions of cleaning the county roads. How can you clear ice that is an inch thick off of the roads when the wind chill was below zero?

Even with an application of salt the temperature has to be so warm to activate the salt. With the limited materials the county has to work with they did the best job they could do.

The county has so much manpower and so much salt and gravel to use. We have 700 miles of roads in Jay County. How can so few men keep 700 miles of roads clean?

My husband plows snow and I sometimes go with him. We easily can put in an 8 to 14 hour day with blowing snow. We do driveways and parking lots and lanes — not even one-tenth of what the county does. I have seen driveways that we have plowed and drive back by the same driveway an hour later and they are blown right back shut.

I also work in the country and live in the country. When roads are bad I leave earlier and take the highways when I can. I also take my time on the county roads.

For the safety of my kids, they would have stayed home last week if school was not canceled.

I think the county workers need to keep doing the good job they are doing.

For the persons who think this is an easy job, maybe they should go spend the day with a snow-plow truck and driver and you can show them how to do their job.

The safety of the children is the top priority. When the road conditions are unsafe, cancel school.

Thank you.
