Good things happening in local economy (09/08/2008)
Editorial
When it comes to the economy, concerns about the national picture can sometimes make you blind to the local picture.
And while there's plenty of reason to be concerned about the national economy, three local bright spots shouldn't go overlooked.
For starters, at the edge of Redkey, steel is going up for Bell Aquaculture's perch processing plant. That's a bit of construction that represents the brightest development in Redkey's economy in a generation.
Perch raised down the road in Albany will be processed at the Bell plant, providing something like 70 new jobs. Pause for a minute and ask yourself the last time Redkey welcomed 70 new jobs. It's been a long, long time.
The company involved seems to have done its homework and is targeting a niche it believes others in aquaculture in the Midwest have overlooked.
The prospects look very bright.
Meanwhile, about 10-12 miles away, right at the intersection that marks the center of the county's mapping system, work has begun on the surface water drainage system for the new Walgreen's that will soon be under construction.
Nationally, Walgreen and CVS have been duking it out in hundreds of locales, often elbow to elbow the way they'll be in Portland.
Nonetheless, the new store represents a welcome expansion of the retail base and gives area residents one more reason to come to Portland to shop.
The third bright spot is several blocks to the west.
That's where tireless entrepreneurs Scott and Su Daniels will be celebrating the grand opening of their new Holiday Inn Express and Suites.
The hotel represents a quantum leap in terms of the level of accommodations available for business travelers, out of town visitors, and those attending events like the Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Association Show.
It's a truly first-class operation. Putting it all together hasn't been a cakewalk.
But the Danielses have demonstrated a commitment to the project worthy of a standing ovation.
It would have been very, very easy to simply walk away from the concept or find somewhere else to make it happen.
We're fortunate that Scott's a hometown guy.
So, go ahead and fret about the national economy. There's reason enough to fret.
But leaven that with an acknowledgement that good things continue to happen, right under our noses. - J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
