GPS set for courthouse (02/23/2009)

Jay County Commissioners

By By STEVE GARBACZ-

To save money and increase accuracy in the future, the Jay County Commissioners chose to center the cornerstone project at the courthouse.

Upon the suggestion of Jay County Surveyor Brad Daniels and Jeff Farber of Farber Survey, the commissioners approved installation of a GPS base station at the courthouse for the cornerstone project.

Daniels is moving toward using GPS for its cornerstones, which act as reference points for surveyors, to propel Jay County into the electronic age.

The original plan called for several substations throughout the county, but a central location should reduce maintenance costs in case of damage to the many outposts. The single, powerful base station should allow the county to triangulate signals off other counties' transmitters as well as make a tie-in to a statewide system easier in the future.

"It will give you a more accurate reading," Daniels said. "The cost is the same but I think we get more for our money."

"This is going to reduce your cost for the remaining townships," Farber said, since it will cut down on labor when the project moves ahead. As of now, the county is only installing GPS in Wayne Township.

The station will be installed on the roof of the courthouse and shouldn't be affected by weather. As long as an Internet connection to the terminal remains unbroken, the GPS should function properly.

"This will be a better way of doing it," Daniels said. "This is the wave of the future."

"I think it's a good idea," said commissioner Faron Parr. "This way we can have it protected at the courthouse."

"OK by me," agreed commissioner Milo Miller Jr. "Put it on the courthouse."

In other business this morning, the commissioners:

•Signed an ordinance authorizing an increase in charges for some items used by Jay County Emergency Medical Services during ambulance runs. Miller discussed the proposal with JEMS throughout the month before its approval.

•Approved appointments to the Citizens' Advisory Committee of the Jay County Solid Waste District.[[In-content Ad]]
