Gray makes all-league team

Weather had wreaked havoc with the Cougars’ spring schedule.
That didn’t seem to bother Adam Gray.
The 2009 Jay County High School graduate shot a 226 at the 54-hole Crossroads League Tournament on Monday and Tuesday to become the first University of St. Francis golfer since 2005 to earn all-league honors.
Gray, whose team had three spring tournaments canceled because of weather, closed the tournament with a 74 in the third round at Orchard Ridge Country Club south of Fort Wayne. He also shot 74 in the first round, and added a 78 in the second to finish in a four-way tie for seventh place.
Bethel’s Brady Klotz won the tournament with a 214.
Danielle Wellman

Carried the Grace College softball team’s offense Saturday in a 10-7 loss to Indiana Wesleyan in the second game of a doubleheader.
Wellman finished 3-for-5 for the Lancers (19-29) with a double, two RBIs and a run. She had two RBIs and a run in the opener Saturday, and drove in the lone run with a double in a 1-0 win over Oakland City.
The freshman had a hit and a run in a 2-1 loss Friday to Oakland City. She finished with three hits and two RBIs April 25 as Grace split a doubleheader with Spring Arbor.
Jordan McMillan
Jay County - 2011
Earned a pair of top-five finishes for the Ball State University women’s track team Saturday in the open division of the GINA Relays hosted by Hillsdale College.
McMillan was the runner-up in a field of 23 runners in the 100-meter dash, finishing with a time of 12.43 seconds. She placed fourth in the 200 dash in 25.19.
Katie Simmons
Jay County - 2012
Joined her former teammate in competing at the GINA Relays for the IPFW women’s track team.
Simmons competed in a field of nearly 80 athletes in the 5,000-meter run. She finished in 18 minutes, 35.89 seconds, for 27th place.
Pazia Speed
Jay County – 2010
Led the Huntington University softball team to a 13-2 win in the second game of a doubleheader Monday, 13-2 over Indiana Wesleyan.
Speed was one of four Foresters to finish with multiple hits as she went 2-for-4 with a game-best three RBIs and two runs. She also had a hit and an RBI in the opener.
The junior had a hit and an RBI in a loss Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader against Calumet, a hit and a run in the first game and a run and an RBI Friday in a win over Manchester.
Drew Houck
Jay County – 2011
Helped the Indiana University East men’s golf team to a fourth-place finish at the seven-team Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament, which was held Monday at Tuesday at Gibson Bay Golf Course.
Houck’s best round at the 54-hole tournament was an 84. He finished with a 259 to post the fourth-best score for the Red Wolves.
Billy Wellman

Hit a home run that proved to be the game-winner Friday as the Ball State University baseball team defeated Ohio 5-4 in the opening game of three-game series.
Wellman hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to give the Cardinals (19-20) a 5-3 lead. Ohio scored in the eighth to pull within one, but BSU held on for the win.
The redshirt junior also had had a hit and an RBI in Saturday’s 13-10 loss to the Bobcats in the series finale.
Megan Taylor
Jay County - 2011
Ran in two events Friday and Saturday for host Manchester University at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
Taylor placed eighth in the 1,500-meter run in 5 minutes, 8.84 seconds. She teamed with Anna McGowen, Sarah Stahl and Kasey Reneau for eighth in the 4x400 relay in 4:30.47.[[In-content Ad]]
