Great job, John

I was pleased to read in your newspaper the appointment of John Gilbert as next year’s Indiana University Marching 100 drum major. This is a real honor for John and I can’t think of anyone who deserves it more. I was privileged to have been John’s middle school band director as well as working with him during his high school years.

In addition, John has been on staff with the JCHS band since his graduation and his expertise and experience have been invaluable to the band.

My only complaint involves the CR’s lack of fanfare (pardon the pun) regarding this appointment. In my years here at Jay County, we have never had a graduate who has gone on to be drum major at any university — let alone a major university marching program such as Indiana University’s.

This is a major achievement for John and another reason for our county to be proud of the Marching Patriot Band program (a little self-serving, I know). I hope the CR does a follow-up to this appointment.

Men like John are the best “natural resources” we have in this county and their successes and accomplishments need to be trumpeted (sorry!).
