Greenville drops Indians to 1-1 (11/22/04)

FORT RECOVERY — The Indians nearly recovered from the first Greenvile run. They never bounced back from the second.

The Greenville Green Wave finished the first half on an 11-2 run and handed the Fort Recovery girls basketball team a 72-54 loss in its home opener.

The game was tied at 10 in the first quarter before Greenville went on a 7-0 run to grab the lead. The Green Wave pushed the advantage to 22-14 in the second quarter before the Tribe rallied.

Fort Recovery (1-1) clawed back, and a Sara Fortkamp 3-pointer cut the deficit to two points midway through the period. A Megan Wenning jumper pulled the Indians to within 29-28 with 2:54 to play in the first half, but that was as close as they would get.

Greenville scored 11 points in the final 2:03 of the half for a 40-30 lead. Fort Recovery never pulled closer than seven points as they shot just 24 percent after the break.

Krystal Rammel (6-of-11, 16 points), Vicki Roessner (7-of-15, 15 points) and Sara Fortkamp (5-of-8, 12 points) shot 53 percent from the field. The rest of the squad was just 4-of-24 for 17 percent.

Fort Recovery was also hurt by turnovers as they coughed up the ball 32 times compared to just 17 by the Green Wave.

Rammel also grabbed 13 rebounds for a double-double as the Indians owned the glass by a 38-19 margin. Tiff Gaerke had nine rebounds.

Fortkamp had five assists, and Roessner added three.

Macie Blinn had 20 points to lead Greenville, including a 6-of-6 effort from the free-throw line. Megan Miller added 15 points, and Rachel Fiely had 12 points. Miller and Fiely each came up with seven steals, and Fiely had four assists.

Molly Jones notched nine points, six rebounds and three assists, and Sara Burns scored eight points.

Fort Recovery will look for its second victory Tuesday when it hosts Mississinawa Valley at 6 p.m.

Junior varsity

A 39-percent shooting effort compared to just 26 percent by Greenville led the Fort Recovery junior varsity team to a 42-39 victory.

The Indians (1-1) outscored Greenville in each of the first three quarters en route to the win, with Val Fortkamp and Abby Niekamp leading the squad with nine points apiece. Lauren Wenning added seven points, and Sam Staugler scored six.

Fortkamp finished with seven steals and four assists, and Niekamp had four steals. Jill Pottkotter posted a game-high 10 rebounds, and Wenning added three assists.

Lisa Brinley paced Greenville with 12 points and six rebounds. Lauren Kindell had eight points, and Whitney Warvel added seven points, eight steals and five boards.[[In-content Ad]]
