Group helping homeless shelter
To the editor: Fifteen local small groups are studying Rick Warren's 40 Days of Community, which is a follow-up to his best-selling 40 Days of Purpose. Some of these groups have adopted the Jayland Rescue Mission as their project. One group first toured the homeless shelter to see what was needed.
Any donated items may be gently used, seconds, or new. Ongoing needs include: Pillows, pillow cases, sheets (twin and full), plastic mattress covers (twin and full), towels (bath, hand and kitchen), wash cloths (bath and kitchen) and money.
Items needed now include bed frames, mattresses and box springs (twin and full), along with a sofa.
In addition to material donations, volunteers are needed. An electrician will fix the hall lighting. A small group will renovate one guest room. The mission has seven more guest rooms, a laundry room and a kitchen. Other small groups will make gift kits - containing books, coloring books, etc. - for the children to take with them.
Due to limited storage space, please do not bring items to the shelter. To offer donations or help, e-mail Brian Bentz at [email protected], or call Ron Freeman after 5 p.m. at (260) 726-4845.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Landfair,

Let's stop it
To the editor:
Let's talk about FOCA (Freedom of Choice Act), a national law that could come into being soon if we don't put a stop to it.
FOCA (H.R. 1964 and S.R. 1173) that would remove all state and local restrictions on abortion. It establishes a new fundamental right to abortion at all stages. It provides that the government cannot interfere in any way with an abortion decision. Nor can it treat abortion differently than any other health service. It further provides for the ability to sue any governmental body that restricts or interferes with a woman's ability to obtain an abortion.
Under FOCA: 1. Doctors/nurses will be sued if they refuse to participate in abortions; 2. Hospitals will be forced to do abortions or shut down; Babies will be aborted up until the day of birth; 4. States will have no say in abortion laws; 5. Parental consent will no longer be needed.
Sen. Barack Obama, when he was speaking to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund in 2007, said the first thing he would do as president would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act.
If you're asking what you can do, write your congressmen and tell them you are against this national law and you want them to vote no.
People, isn't it time we step up to the line and uphold our Christian standards? One baby is being aborted every second in the United States. "Thou shalt not kill." Do you want to be responsible for these babies? Then let's stop it.
