Historic Preservation Commission
By By RACHELLE HAUGHN-
The next step has been taken in the process of establishing a historic preservation ordinance in Portland.
Members of a local board voted Thursday to pay the Historic Landmarks Foundation $6,500 to advise in the creation of a historic preservation ordinance for the city. Officials with the foundation will be working with the new Historic Preservation Commission.
The goal of the commission is to establish guidelines for any future changes to the facades of downtown businesses. Portland Board of Works members approved the agreement with the foundation on Thursday morning.
Members of the seven-member commission include several property owners, contractors and historical experts. There also are several non-voting advisory members.
Members include Kristi Corle, Don Gillespie, Barry Hudson, Milo Miller Jr., Emily Roberts, Jane Spencer and Pat Szakaly.
In a related matter, the board also voted to pay Kristi Sturtz of Sturtz Public Management Group an additional $10,000 for her work in the creation of the historic preservation ordinance. She will be working with the foundation and the commission.
Also Thursday, board members:
•Approved a local man's request to tap into the city's sewer system.
Randy Fisher made the request for property located at 121 West 200 South, Portland.
Board members recently decided to make the process of sewer tap-in applications more thorough, which is why Fisher's request was reviewed by the board of works. Fisher also was required to fill out a more detailed application form as part of the new review process, said Linda Kennedy, city clerk-treasurer.
•Approved sick leave for water department employee Jack Baughman. He has been off work since July 27 because of surgery and is expected to return next week.
•Learned that the prices for fuel previously quoted by G&G Oil have increased.
Kennedy said the prices increased by about 8 percent. Board members decided to continue to purchase items from the company for city-owned vehicles.[[In-content Ad]]
