Habitat Blitz Build Day set for Monday (11/09/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Monday, Nov. 12 will be the Jay County Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build Day at 440 E. Seventh St., Portland, beginning at 8 a.m.

Volunteers with all skill levels will be needed as we anticipate securing the house by locking the front door by 5 p.m.

At noon, a meal will be provided by Asbury United Methodist Church, with the Red Cross providing snacks, drinks and of course first aid.

This will be our 11th build since 1997, with five homes in Portland, three in Dunkirk, two in Pennville and one in Redkey.

This year's home will be 1,050-square feet, including three bedrooms, one bath, central heat and cooling, and provided with washer, dryer, stove and refrigerator.

To be successfully chosen as our new homeowner, the individual or couple must not have previously owned a house.

The mortgage payment will be for the cost of the material only, as labor is volunteer and interest is waived.

Typically a Habitat homeowner will have a mortgage of $45,000 for 20 years and have a monthly payment of around $200.

Bring a hammer and make plans to join in the fellowship to help out with the 2007 Blitz Build Day.

Jeb Bubp,

Jay County Habitat for Humanity

Bad idea

To the editor:

An open letter to Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels regarding his proposed tax plan for real estate taxes.

I don't know about how most other Indiana residents feel, but I do know the ones I have talked to on both sides of the political arena that are ready to stage an "Indiana" Boston Tea Party.

When I first heard Gov. Daniels' proposal on the real estate taxes, I thought perhaps this won't be so bad.

Upon further viewing I realized this would be a complete monster.

Our taxes this year rose almost 100 percent.

Folks, do you realize on a $100,000 home this could be $1,000 a year?

If you have a $100,000 rental home this could raise the taxes to $2,000 a year and on a $100,000 business this would be a tax of $3,000 a year?

Who is going to pay the increased taxes on a rental home? You got it, the renter.

This is an increase over what we are paying now on the renewed tax reassessment for 2007.

Not to mention raising the state sales tax to 7 percent along with the new higher Jay County taxes we are now paying.

It is fair to say that perhaps Indiana residents should rise up in arms and declare no more taxes as our founding fathers did in Boston Harbor.

It calls for an old-fashioned tar-and-feathering in words only to show the drastic measures needed to stop this administration, whether Democrats or Republicans.

Folks, get on the phone, get the word out to the grass roots, call your state senators and state representatives and get this idea railroaded before it can get a jump off the ground.

(Editor's note: Daniels' proposed property tax reform would set a cap on property taxes of 1 percent of the value of a residential property, 2 percent of the value of a rental property, and 3 percent of the value of a commercial property. It would not automatically raise the property taxes to those levels).

Unfair

To the editor:

I am writing this letter in regards to our county jails. I have a pet-peeve regarding how they charge the inmates for such articles as cigarettes, postage stamps and other small items, as well as placing long distance calls.

I think it is being unfair to the inmates. That's highway robbery to my estimation.

The county jails are owned and supported by our citizen tax dollars. What do we pay taxes for? It seems to me this is very unfair.

Is it a method to make them learn right from wrong? We pay dear for property taxes and the county taxes taken out of our paychecks. Just tell me where all this goes.

I just learned from a dear friend in the Adams County Jail (Decatur) that they charged him $3 for one cigarette and 60 cents to mail a letter.

He stated it is outrageous for a long distance call.

I feel like these fellows are paying their dues for their crimes or whatever enough without all this nonsense going on.

I have always heard of this but never knew for sure until now.

A taxpayer,

Billie M. Jetter
