Half empty? (1/19/05)

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

I’ll bet those 150,000 people who lost their lives in the tsunami, the people who lost their lives in the mudslides, the people who lost their homes in the tornados and the men and women overseas who are risking their lives for our freedom feel sorry for you having to go without power. As for me, I don’t.

Those are the people I feel sorry for. For you to sit and criticize the linemen who were spread out all over the countryside repairing down lines to restore power hours upon hours is just plain ludicrous. This isn’t about you, Joe, we all had to go through the same inconvenience as you. There were men and women working around the clock, away from their family and friends, helping to get the community back to normal. Yes, they were getting paid to do it, but it was an inconvenience to them also.

Maybe if you were a little more prepared for such a thing it wouldn’t have been so bad. As the old saying goes, expect the best, prepare for the worst. I’ve been gone for 32 years. I just moved back a year ago and this was nothing to what I’ve experienced. I, as you should be, am thankful for what I have.

Another thing you have obviously overlooked: What about the Red Cross and the volunteers who gave their time away for their family and their needs to help people who were in need?

Come on Joe, wake up and smell the roses. There are thousands of people who were a lot worse off than you. Take your half-empty glass and fill it up. Stop the whining.

I would like to thank all the power companies who came from miles and miles away to help restore the power. Regardless of what Joe saw, I saw hundreds of people working their tails off to restore power. And thank you to the community for an amazing show of strength in helping your fellow community members.

One last thing, Joe, if this happens again, be prepared and do something positive. You will feel much better about what you have.

Joe, call the electric company and ask them if you can be a little late with your bill. You may be surprised. Come on, Joe, git ‘er done.
