Hearing held on water grant (07/11/07)

REDKEY - Town officials here will soon be applying for a $500,000 grant from the state to fund water system improvements - including a new, larger water tower tank.
A brief public hearing on the grant request was conducted Tuesday evening at Redkey Town Hall.
Preliminary documents need to be filed with state officials by the end of this week. The deadline for submitting the final grant application is in September, Jay County Community Developer Ami Huffman explained.
She said the town will be seeking the water system improvement grant through the Indiana Office of Rural and Community Affairs. It will require $50,000 (10 percent) in matching funds from Redkey. The town is also in the process of applying for another grant or possibly a loan through the United States Department of Agriculture to cover that expense.
About a dozen persons - including Redkey Council members Dixie Toy, Darrell Smith and Dottie Quakenbush - attended Tuesday night's public hearing, with all speaking in favor of the plan.
Huffman encouraged people to send more letters of support. Huffman said they could be submitted to her at her office in Portland or given to Redkey clerk-treasurer Sandy Kirby at the town hall.
The proposed project calls for replacing Redkey's current water tower which the town bought used in the late 1920s.
The current tank leaks if it is filled to capacity. Town officials are working with Commonwealth Engineering Inc., Indianapolis, on this project, and the engineering firm is recommending a new, larger tank.
Redkey Fire Chief Randy Young was present at Tuesday night's meeting. He voiced support for the project, saying improving the water system would benefit his department and could help reduce fire liability insurance rates for property owners as well.
There have been three boil orders issued in the past year because of problems with the town water system.
Young added that improving the water system might make it easier to attract new businesses and industry to the community.
A follow-up public hearing on the grant proposal is set for Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. in Redkey Town Hall.[[In-content Ad]]
