Hearing Thursday on Ind. 26 project (10/5/04)
State plans upgrade between Ind. 1, Portland
A public hearing on the proposed reconstruction of Ind. 26 west of Portland β a project that is expect to cost more than $12 million β will be held Thursday night at Jay County High School.
The hearing, which will be conducted by the Indiana Department of Transportation, will detail plans to widen and improve approximately seven miles of Ind. 26 from its intersection with Ind. 67 near the high school to its intersection with Ind. 1. The hearing, which will be held in the high school commons, will begin at 6 p.m.
No formal dates have been set for construction on the project, which has been in the discussion stages for more than five years.
Representatives will be available to answer questions and address concerns following a formal presentation by INDOT officials.
State officials are proposing increasing the lane width on the stretch of highway to 12 feet, as well as adding an 8-foot shoulder. Information from INDOT states current lane widths as 9 feet and the current shoulder width as 1 to 3 feet. In some stretches, the shoulder of the highway is currently non-existent.
A release from INDOT stated βthe existing Ind. 26 roadway is inadequate for the significant commercial vehicle traffic that travels this route.β
While the main aspect of the project will be widening of the road and shoulder, a north-south section of the road between the current intersections with county road 50 North and Division Road will be altered to remove two 90-degree turns.
A bridge over Brooks Creek just east of Ind. 1 will be widened and Ind. 26 will be moved slightly to the north between Ind. 1 and county road 850 West to accommodate the widening.
Homes owned by Jeff and Teresa Bowen and Roger W. Roberts and Brenda K. Kinser will be removed as part of the project.
Engineering and land acquisition costs are expected to total about $2 million, with construction costs between $10.8 and $13.1 million, depending on inflation and the dates of construction.
(Editor's note: An official with INDOT said Wednesday morning that construction on the project is slated for 2006 or 2007).[[In-content Ad]]
