Heitkamp and McClung earn major awards (03/05/05)
Collegiate check-up
A pair of local athletes were honored recently for their athletic and academic achievements.
Capital University’s Sara Heitkamp, a graduate of Fort Recovery, received two major honors this week. She won the 2005 Helen Ludwig Ohio Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Year award as voted by the conference coaches. She was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Women’s Basketball College Division First Team.
Jay County graduate and Bowling Green senior Kerri McClung was named to the Women’s Indoor Track and Field Academic All-Mid-American Conference team.
Heitkamp, a junior, became the fourth Crusader ever to earn the Player of the Year honor. She was the only player who was selected to the OAC first-team for the second year in a row.
She was second in the OAC in scoring at 18.9 points per game and steals with 92. She ranked third in assists with 108.
Heitkamp scored a total of 491 points this year — sixth highest in school history — and ranks eighth on the Capital career list with 1,183. She finished her career at No. 3 in scoring at Fort Recovery.
She was selected for her ESPN The Magazine award from a field which included all NCAA Division II, II and NAIA women’s basketball programs. She was the only athlete from Ohio to earn the honor and the third in school history. She carries a 3.83 grade point average.
Heitkamp was also a D3hoops.com Preseason All-American and a two-time OAC Player of the Week this year.
McClung carries a 3.85 grade point average and majors in special education. She was the only Falcon selected for the team.
She also had a good showing as BGSU finished 10th at the MAC Indoor Championships. She placed second in the shot put to Kent’s Breann Smith with a launch of 49 feet, 2.5 inches.
Amy Meyer
The South Adams graduate scored in double figures as the University of St. Francis women’s basketball team won its semifinal game before falling in the championship of the Mid-Central College Conference tournament this week.
Meyer scored 11 points as the Cougars knocked off 19th-ranked Taylor 71-66 in the semifinal round. She also had five rebounds and one assist.
St. Francis lost the tournament title game 63-55 to No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan. Meyer had four points and three rebounds in the defeat.
The senior will still get to play at least one more game as St. Francis qualified for the NAIA Division II women’s basketball tournament. The Cougars will meet 15th-ranked Hastings in the first round at Sioux City, Iowa Wednesday at 6:45 p.m.
Troy Baumer
The graduate of South Adams posted a sixth-place as the Bluffton University men’s track team was also sixth at a nine-team meet at Ohio Northern Feb. 25.
Baumer picked up one point for his team by finishing sixth in the 300-meter dash in 37.08 seconds.
He was also 21st in the 55-meter dash in 6.94.
Steph Welch
Another South Adams graduate, she got a pair of top six finishes as the Bluffton University women’s track team was seventh in a 10-team field at Ohio Northern.
Welch had her top effort in the 800-meter run, finishing fourth in 2-minutes, 34.05 seconds. She added a sixth-place finish in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4 feet, 10.5 inches.
Amanda Habegger
Also a graduate of South Adams, she finished in the top 10 in two races at ONU.
Habegger’s best event of the day was the 400-meter dash, in which she took sixth in 1-minute, 4.12 seconds. She was seventh in her other race, finishing the 55-meter hurdles in 9.55 seconds.
Joanie Muhlenkamp
The Jay County graduate scored eight points in another big win for the Taylor University Fort Wayne women’s basketball team.
Muhlenkamp came off the bench to grab six rebounds as the Falcons thumped Marygrove College 67-47 Feb. 26. She also had one assist.
Nicole VanSkyock
A graduate of Jay County, she contributed to the Anderson University women’s track team’s second-place finish as it hosted the Fred Wilt Invitational Feb. 26.
VanSkyock, a freshman, finished seven in the 800-meter run, posting a time of 2-minutes, 38.54 seconds.
Abby Arnold
After swimming on a seventh-place relay team on the first day of competition, this Jay County graduate hit the water in three more events as the Ball State women’s swim team took fourth in the Mid-American Conference championships last weekend.
Arnold’s best individual finish came in the 100-yard backstroke, where she was 17th in 59.74 seconds. She was also 25th in the 50 freestyle in 24.55, and 31st in the 100 freestyle in 53.80.
Tyler Niekamp
The Fort Recovery graduate grabbed one rebound in the Findlay University men’s basketball team’s Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal victory over Hillsdale. Findlay (25-3) won the game by a 71-54 score.[[In-content Ad]]
