Another award came Sara Heitkamp’s way this week.
Heitkamp, who graduated from Fort Recovery in 2002 and is a senior on the Capital University women’s basketball team, and sophomore teammate Jenna Algie were named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District IV Women’s Basketball team.
To earn academic all-district honors an athlete must be a starter or key reserve and hold at least a 3.2 grade point average. District IV includes all NCAA Division II and III schools and NAIA schools in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama.
Because she was selected to the district first team, Heitkamp will move on to the national ballot. She was a national All-American and Academic All-American last season and has won four Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards this season.
Heitkamp, who has a 3.82 GPA, has been the leading scorer for the 20th-ranked Crusaders 12 times this season, including each of the last five games. She racked up 21 points in Capital’s 65-57 victory over Muskingum Feb. 4.
She also had 16 points, five steals, three rebounds and two assists as the Crusaders defeated John Carroll 68-58 Wednesday.
She ranks first in the OAC in steals at 3.2 per game. She is second in scoring (17.9), fifth in assists (3.2) and eight in rebounds (6.1).
