Heitkamp leads record comeback (02/04/06)

Collegiate Check-up

The Capital Crusaders had just suffered their third loss of the season and seemed headed for a fourth. Then a Fort Recovery graduate helped make Division III history.

Capital’s women’s basketball team is ranked 20th in the nation in the NCAA’s Division III, but trailed 23rd-ranked Wilmington 39-11 Wednesday. Then Sara Heitkamp, who graduated from Fort Recovery in 2002, led her team all the way back with 28 points including the game-winning shot with two seconds to go in a 73-71 Crusader win.

The comeback — Capital outscored Wilmington 62-32 over the final 24 minutes — was the largest in Division III history.

Heitkamp scored 12 of her team’s 20 first-half points and continued to carry the team after the break. The Crusaders were still down by five points with 1:16 to go, but the former Indian closed the game with a 7-0 run all by herself for the victory.

She shot 11-of-23 and hit four 3-pointers in raising her season scoring average to 17.9 points per game. She also had five assists, four rebounds and four steals as Capital improved to 17-3.

Heitkamp also had 25 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals in the Crusaders’ 78-68 loss to Otterbein Jan. 28.
