Help available for drug, alcohol problems (09/25/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

September is National Alcohol and Drug Addition Recovery month.

As many of you are aware, problems with substance abuse continue to plague our community. As a member of the Jay County Drug Prevention Coalition, I have the opportunity to increase my awareness of issues relating to substance abuse and treatment opportunities.

It is vital that everyone make an effort to learn about substance abuse and how it affects us all. I have recently gathered information from members of the community and was shocked to discover that nearly 30 percent of the individuals did not know who to contact if they, or someone they knew, had a drug or alcohol problem.

As part of recovery month, it is the goal of the Jay County Drug Prevention Coalition to share information about treatment options available locally. Individuals who have a problem with alcohol or drug addiction can receive treatment at Meridian Services or can participate in the local Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.

In addition, there is support locally (through Alanon and Alateen) for individuals who have a loved one dealing with addiction. These meetings are listed weekly in the community calendar.

Addition is a very powerful disease and assisting our fellow citizens in this battle to overcome dependence is important to their continued success.

It is time that you as a community member take the time to educate yourself, attend community meetings, and support local law enforcement.

Wake up, Jay County, and get involved. Together we can make a difference.

Judgment

To the editor:

I would first like to start out by saying Pastor Terry Bye is right in his letter to the editor.

I would like to go further into the subject. Did you know a person can commit capital murder, or any criminal offense for that matter, and if "they" do not get a "speedy trial" in a couple years guess what happens?

The judge will dismiss the case and it cannot be tried again.

It is a little "constitutional right" that our forefathers wrote in the constitution, yet the Criminal, is the one that benefits - not the victim, not the "normal citizen." And definitely not people seeking justice in civil cases.

We have all seen on the news where child rapists, murders, and other alleged criminals are set free because for whatever reason they did not get a speedy trial.

Yet It will most likely take five years (that's right, five years) if we are lucky, just to get to trial on the wrongful death lawsuit of our son, Brandon Hilbert, who died after being chased down on a motorcycle by a former Portland Police officer.

Well I just want to say to any and everyone who is going through the same scenario: I am sorry very sorry, and I feel your pain.

Any time you challenge a government entity, all you get is one delay after another while they all try to wear you down to a little nub and get you to finally just give up.

Well let me say: without question, I will not give up even if it takes the rest of my life. My son would want me to make sure what happened to him and his passenger does not happen again.

And like Pastor Bye said, "Judgment will surely come."
