Help fight against cancer
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
In the next few weeks Jay County newspaper subscribers will find 2014 WALK Against Cancer advertisements in their newspaper. It is our hope that the community will join us June 21 at Jay County High School to raise money for Jay County Cancer Society. The cancer society provides financial assistance to cancer patients in Jay County for medical expenses, travel, prescriptions, testing, etc.
Activities start with a survivor dinner at 6:00 p.m. (reservations required by today), vendor area 6 to 9 p.m., activities for the family 6 to 9 p.m., opening ceremonies with balloon launch at 8:30 p.m. and the luminary ceremony at 9:30 p.m. This year many donated items will be raffled off at 8:30 p.m. Raffle tickets will be available before and the night of the WALK this year.
The event will be held at the JCHS track rain or shine. We will not be moving the event indoors in case of inclement weather. So bring a jacket, umbrella and lawn chairs as we will be sitting around the track on the grassy area.
Flyers for the event are available at Jay County Public Library, Jay County Hospital and many local businesses. The flyer is also available online at jaycountychamber.com. The flyer has the times of all the events and a pledge sheet on the back. Any walker who collects over $100.00 will receive a free WALK t-shirt while supplies last.
Thank you to our 2014 Platinum Sponsors: Dr. Charles Miller Memorial, Stoneridge Electronics, Delta Theta Tau XI, L-J Miller Farms, Family of Joe Louks, Schmit Chiropractic Offices LLC, Mayor Geesaman 2014 Charity Golf Outing, Fellowship Baptist Church, Jay County Hospital/IU Ball Memorial, Church of the Brethren and First Bank of Berne Portland Branch.
Also to our Gold Sponsors: Dr. Malcolm George, JSC Transportation, Wholesale Carpet Outlet Express, MainSource Bank, Arch Bridge Kroozers, Family Worship Center, Hartzell Air Movement employees, Dr. David Fullenkamp OD PC, Altar Rosary Society, Hartzell Air Movement Inc., S.D.P. Manufacturing Inc., Inman U-Loc Storage, Williams Auto Parts, Coca-Cola Refreshments, Knights of Columbus, Blacksmith Union Local 1620, Remember When – The VanSkyock Family, New Beginnings Holiness Church of Blaine, Williamson Spencer & Penrod Funeral Home and Kiwanis Club of Portland.
How can you help?
There are many ways: collect money from your friends, co-workers, family, neighbors, etc. as pledges or for luminaries and keep track on the pledge sheet, then bring the pledge sheet and money to the WALK. Ask your employer to make a donation on your behalf. Help spread the word by sharing this information with as many people as possible. Display the flyer in your place of business. Have a charity fundraiser at your place of employment, church or philanthropic group and donate the funds raised to the WALK Against Cancer. The ways to help are endless and the difference every dollar makes is priceless.
Remember 100 percent of the money donated to Jay County Cancer Society remains in Jay County helping our neighbors and friends with their uninsured cancer related expenses.
If you would like to volunteer at the WALK or need additional information, please contact us at (260) 726-8110 and leave a message.
Donations are accepted the night of the WALK or anytime at P.O. Box 614, Portland, IN 47371.
We look forward to seeing you on the evening of June 21, as we remember those lost, honor those who are suffering and celebrate with those who have won the fight against cancer.
Thank you,
