Help out COPS ride (6/14/04)

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

I am writing in regards to a bike ride, taking place in Indiana for C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors). C.O.P.S. is a non-profit organization providing resources to assist in the rebuilding of the lives of survivors of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. The goal of the bike ride is to raise awareness of fallen officers and funding for Indiana Concerns of Police Survivors. Last year Indiana lost four officers in the line of duty and one officer has given his life so far in 2004.

The bike ride will take 13 days and travel 1,000 miles through our state, with proceeds raised staying in Indiana for our C.O.P.S. chapter. On the seventh day of the bike ride, June 17, the bike riders will pedal their way through Dunkirk. They will stop at the West Jay Community Center for lunch.

This ride is very important to the riders and all law enforcement agencies throughout the state of Indiana. I am looking for support from media coverage to donations to give to Indiana C.O.P.S. and to help with lunch expenses. The media coverage is very important. We want this ride to be recognized throughout the state so riders get courtesy on the roadways and a warm welcome in each community they ride through.

On June 17, the bike riders will leave from Bluffton, stop in Dunkirk for lunch and continue to Richmond where they will stop for the evening.

The final day of the bike ride, Wednesday, June 23, the ride will end at the Police/Fire Memorial in Indianapolis where a candlelight vigil will take place.

Everyone is encouraged to welcome the riders into Dunkirk or anywhere else on the route. All media coverage will be greatly appreciated.

If you would like more information regarding the ride or would like to participate in any way, please call Gary Dudley with the Indiana State Police at (317) 852-4426, or locally, you can contact me at the Dunkirk Police Department at (765) 768-6061.

Thank you,

Officer Andrea Weekley,
