Help raise funds to fight cancer
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
In the next few weeks Jay County residents will find 2013 WALK Against Cancer advertisements in their newspapers. We are celebrating the 12th anniversary of this event.
It is our hope the community will join us Saturday, June 22 at the Jay County High School track to raise money for the Jay County Cancer Society. The society provides financial assistance to cancer patients in Jay County for medical expenses, travel, prescriptions, testing, etc.
Activities start with a survivor dinner at 6 p.m. (reservations requested by June 10), vendor area, kid’s jungle safari area and concessions from 6 to 9 p.m.; opening ceremonies with balloon launch at 8:30 p.m. and the luminary ceremony at 9:30 p.m.
The event will be held rain or shine. Bring a jacket, umbrella and lawn chairs.
Fliers are available at the Jay County Public Library, Jay County Hospital, Jay Community Center and at many county businesses, or at www.jaycountychamber.com. It has the times for the event and a pledge sheet on the back. Walkers who collect pledges of more than $100 will receive a free WALK t-shirt.
Thank you to our 2013 Platinum sponsors: Delta Theta Tau, XI, Cincinnatus League, Stoneridge Electronics, Dr. Charles Miller Memorial, Knights of Columbus, L-J Miller Farms, Schmit Chiropractic, Joe Louks and kids/grandkids, and Berry Plastics (Richmond).
Also to our gold sponsors: Altar Rosary Society, Family Worship Center, Starr Realty LLC, Dr. David Fullenkamp, Fellowship Baptist Church, Hartzell Fan, Inman U-Loc, Jay County Hospital, MainSource Bank, Mayor Geesaman’s 2013 Charity Golf Outing, Blacksmith Local 1620, Remember When (the VanSkyock family), SDP Manufacturing, Dr. Malcom George, New Beginnings Holiness Church, Carpet Outlet Express, First Bank of Berne, Jay School bus drivers, IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital and Williams Auto Parts.
How can you help?
There are many ways. Collect money from your friends, co-workers, family, neighbors, etc., as pledges or for luminaries, then bring the pledge sheet and money to the WALK. Ask your employer to make a donation on your behalf. Help spread the word by sharing this information with as many people as possible. Display the flier in your place of business. Have a charity fundraiser at your place of employment, church or philanthropic group and donate the funds raised to the WALK Against Cancer. The ways to help are endless and the difference every dollar makes is priceless.
Remember that 100 percent of the money donated to the Jay County Cancer Society remains in Jay County helping our neighbors and friends with their non-insured cancer-related expenses. In 2012 nearly 80 Jay County cancer patients were helped.
If you would like to volunteer at the WALK or need additional information, please leave a message at (260) 726-8110. Donations are accepted the night of the WALK or anytime at P.O. Box 614, Portland, IN, 47371.
We look forward to seeing you on June 23, as we remember those lost, honor those suffering and celebrate with those who have won the fight against cancer.
Thank you.
