Heritage Festival a success (10/9/04)

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

The Jay County Historical Society wishes to thank all who were involved in any way in making our Heritage Festival a huge success. A special thanks to chairpersons Rosie Grapner and Sandy Bubp and their committee for the many months of planning and organizing this event. Thanks, too, to all of the volunteers who helped with the day, as well as the crafters and artisans who displayed their talents and wares.

We also wish to thank the community for taking the time to attend the Heritage Festival. Before Saturday afternoon was over, 200 foot-long hot dogs had been consumed. If you aren’t aware, the foot-long hot dog is part of Jay County history as it was the idea of former rural Redkey resident Nellie Smith. More than 300 people were served ham and beans on Saturday evening. Sunday saw a steady stream of visitors enjoying the exhibits, chili and apple dumplings.

The Historical Society wishes to again recognize Arts Place Inc., the Indiana Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts for the grant we received. These funds made it possible to expand our festival to a two-day event and bring in more artisans.

It was thrilling to see so many families with younger children attending this event. Hopefully, the children went away with a little more understanding of life in the past. Many local residents who toured the museum were there for the first time and were amazed at the amount of history being preserved. We invite the community to visit the museum throughout the year and also to consider membership in the Historical Society. The museum is staffed entirely by volunteers and operates on membership dues and donations from the community.

Watch the newspaper for announcements for further special events. Admission to the museum is always free, although donations are appreciated.

Sincerely,

Kay Locker, president,

Jay County Historical Society
