He's off to a good start

Editorial

Brian Bosma is off on the right foot.
Time will tell how effectively the Indiana House will function under his leadership with its Republican majority.
But for now, it looks as if Bosma is someone who was listening to the voters on election day.
As he puts it, voters weren’t picking winners and losers; they were asserting their desire to have lawmakers get down to business.
That means cooperation, bipartisanship, and an effort to build consensus.
The new Speaker’s decision this week to appoint a couple of Democrats as committee chair is a step in that direction.
Never before in the history of the Indiana House has the leader of the majority party willingly brought the minority party into a position of shared leadership. Republicans have always appointed Republican chairmen; Democrats have always appointed Democratic chairmen.
That was business as usual, and Speaker Bosma made it clear this week that business as usual isn’t going to be good enough.
Will it work? That remains to be seen.
But anyone who has met and talked with Brian Bosma will tell you he’s not only intelligent and articulate, he’s also a gentleman.
And our guess is he has the diplomatic skills to make this work. — J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
