Hill reassignment set Monday

Jay School Board

Jay County High School could be looking for a new football coach as soon as Tuesday.

Jay Schools superintendent Tim Long said this morning that he will recommend at Monday's school board meeting that Shane Hill be re-assigned from his position as head football coach. Hill, who also teaches mathematics at JCHS, has one year remaining on his contract.

Multiple school board members confirmed last month that they had been told the administration would recommend that Hill not return as football coach next season. Long addressed that decision this morning.

"I just felt like we needed a change of direction," he said. "Even though he did have one year remaining, my feeling was that now was the time to do that ... If that was the direction I felt we were going to go in, I felt it was best to do that now rather than wait."

The last year of the contract will still be honored financially, and if the board approves Long's recommendation Hill will be re-assigned to other duties within the football program.

"This is no different than any other business decision. That's the way I'm taking it," said Hill. "The school has decided a different direction is the direction they need to go.

"It's not something anybody is ever really ready for or prepared for, but it is something that happens in our profession. The best thing to do is just move on and see what I can do for the school while I'm here and see what happens in the future."

Hill has a career record of 39-48 in eight seasons at JCHS with one sectional title and three Olympic Athletic Conference championships. The 2009 squad finished 2-8 and lost its last seven games.

He said he will be looking for another head coaching job.

"I've got a lot of passion for the game of football still burning inside of me," said Hill. "If the right situation comes along and it's the right move for my family ... then I'm going to investigate.

"We'll evaluate the things that come along as they come along ..."

Long said he would like to post the job opening, for which he expects to also have a teaching position available if necesary, immediately and accept applications until January with a goal of making a hire no later than March 1. After applications are reviewed, candidates would be interviewed by a selection committee that will include several board members, JCHS principal Phil Ford and JCHS athletics director Ted Habegger.

"I'd like to see a cohesiveness and a movement towards getting our program to the next level," said Long of what he would be looking for in a new coach. "I'm keeping it wide open. I don't have any preconceived notions about people ... We have had calls already, and I anticipate that there will be high interest in the job."
