His complaints

Editor's mailbag

By To the editor:-

I will miss Dorothy Warner’s comments and her wisdom. My sincere condolences to the family.

I am having a bad day today (March 12). I canceled my cable television. I talked to a very nice lady. I asked if my call would warrant a cancellation reply. She said no, but it would be disconnected Tuesday, March 16, and a refund for the remainder of the month would be sent to me in approximately 12 weeks. I said that I pay my cable four weeks in advance, and asked why it takes 12 weeks for a refund.

She asked me why I was discontinuing service. I told her due to many increases. We had a 6 percent increase last year. And since Insight took over the cable in April of 1999, in five years there has been a 47.4 percent increase. So I went to the dish.

The second call of the morning went to my local paper. I wanted to place a “for sale” ad on a used car owned by my son but parked in my driveway. Again I talked to a very nice lady who was so kind, but she informed me I would have to pay in advance. I would have to come to the office or pay by credit card. Now in addition to the “for sale” ad I have an additional charge with my credit card, a canceled check, my time, and a stamp for mailing!

I would put my credit rating against anyone in the U.S. of America. So why do I have to pay in advance for anything? I like to pay after I receive the product.

The question is trust, America.

Fifty-four years ago this coming Sept. 15, in 1950, I, with a lot of young people, landed on the shores of Inchon, South Korea. I was just a young fellow of 19. A younger brother to three who saw action in World War II. Thank God, we all came home.

Today we have our young people in Iraq and all over the world (it seems to me) fighting for what?

When I entered the service of my country I took an oath. In all honesty, I could not repeat that oath today. But we have continued to send our young people to foreign lands. Today, I do believe we are spread too thin to be safe with our military personnel.

In yesteryears we fought for peace. Today, I wonder.

They took away our rights that we were raised on. Today, allowing our children to say the Pledge of Allegiance is not allowed. Marriage to man and man and woman and woman in some cities is allowed. Where is the law? How sickly can American become?

Today, you hear Social Security is going broke. For our baby boomers, the question is when? But you never hear why!

They never say the government owes social security $1.3 trillion. For pork barrel (spending) and for payment to other countries, etc.

They do tell you (as of 2001) that 400,000 foreigners collect social security benefits, without working one day in America.

Our government is lying to the American people; why, I do not know — it’s a disgrace. But now it’s a proven fact.

Indianapolis embarrassed this state of Hoosierland. It is a disgrace what our elected officers did to this state a few weeks ago. They were elected to solve problems of the people — not to create problems for us Hoosiers. They do not have the respect (or deserve the respect) of this individual who gave his blood on the soil of North and South Korea in 1950 and 1951.

Get out and vote, please.

Yet, I am still proud to be an American.
