Historical society thanks supporters (10/22/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

The Jay County Historical Society wishes to thank all who were involved in making our 5th annual Heritage Festival a success. A special thanks to Rosie Grapner and Sandy Bubp and their committee for all the work involved in planning and organizing such a large event.

Committee members were Susie Johanning, Anita Young, Rod Wolford, Rex Pinkerton, Jeff Bowen, Judy Williamson and Jim and Carol Hedges. Of course, the festival would not happen without the help of all the other volunteers and artisans, crafters and demonstrators who take part.

Thanks to all who attended our festival. It was exciting to see young children enjoying the many activities, which were planned especially for them. Hopefully they went away with a better understanding of life in the past.

We also wish to thank Arts Place Inc., the Indiana Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts for the grant we received, and all the local businesses and organizations for their contributions to the festival. These funds make it possible to offer free admission.

The weatherman provided perfect weather. Over the two days, an estimated 2,500 to 3,000 viewed displays and demonstrations inside and outside of the museum, listened to storytellers and musicians, and sampled the food.

In celebration of the 150th birthday of Portland native Elwood Haynes, we were pleased to have Haynes automobiles on display and guests from Kokomo, where Mr. Haynes made his home after he left Portland.

Membership in the Jay County Historical Society continues to grow and has now exceeded 560.

Annual membership dues of $15 for individuals and $25 for families include a subscription to our monthly newsletter and help with the upkeep of the museum so that we may continue to preserve our heritage for future generations. Anyone wishing to join may send dues to 903 E. Main St., Portland, IN, 47371.

We again thank the community for all of their interest in history and support of the museum.

Our next special event will be "Christmas at the Museum," which begins in late November. Also, watch for announcements about next year's Heritage Festival already being planned.

Kay Locker, president,

Jay County Historical

Society Inc.

Judo thanks

To the editor:

Judan Judo would like to thank our supporters for another great year.

Children and adults in our program were given the opportunity to host the Indiana Judo State Championships, participate in the exchange with the Japanese Culture team, and compete in an international event in Florida.

Judan Judo is a not-for-profit organization located in Portland since 1978.

It provides a year-round program where all children can be champions.

Again, we thank the community, and the following companies and individuals for their support:

Tyson Foods, Jay School Corporation, Jinny's Café, Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Association, Fourth of July Committee, Viola Clark, Alpine Water, Trinity United Methodist Church, Pizza Hut, Bearcreek Crossing, Majel Jordan, Jay County Solid Waste District and parents who have donated countless supplies and hours.

Not cared-for

To the editor:

On the morning of Sunday, Sept. 30, I witnessed an unnecessary accident with a church bus and a dog.

Sadly enough, the dog died because no one cared enough to have the dog properly kept in a fenced-in yard.

The poor bus driver drove around the block several times to try and locate the owner of the dog, without any success.

I hope that this makes pet owners think about their pets next time.

Just my opinion.
