History is coming to life in Jay County (11/03/06)

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

History is alive and well in Jay County. This is evidenced by the increasing number of people who are showing an interest in the Jay County Historical Museum and activities sponsored by the historical society. Almost every day, someone tours the museum or comes in to donate items or search for information.

Our recent Heritage Festival drew in large numbers of people to view displays and demonstrations, listen to storytellers or musicians, and sample the food.

An added attraction this year was a style show of Jay County fashions from the past modeled by Jay County residents. A special thanks to chairpersons Rosie Grapner and Sandy Bubp and their committee for all the time and effort they spent planning this event.

Thanks also to the volunteers who helped make this another successful event and all who attended. The historical society also wishes to recognize The Portland Foundation, Arts Place Inc., the Indiana Arts Commission and National Endowment for the Arts for grants and all of our local sponsors for their monetary support of the festival.

We also applaud the Arch Bridge Kroozers for sponsoring a shuttle service from uptown to the museum on Saturday.

The interest shown in the historical displays at the 100th anniversary celebration of the Jay County Hospital and the 80th birthday party for the Weiler Building are more evidence that Jay Countians are interested in their heritage.

During the summer, much work was done at the museum to make it more secure and environmentally friendly to the artifacts housed there. Windows were eliminated, insulation and metal siding were installed on the outside of the building, and a portion of the roof was replaced. The ceilings were insulated, three new furnaces with air conditioning units were installed, and an air conditioner was added to an existing furnace. A security and fire alarm system was also installed. All of this work was possible because of grants from The Portland Foundation, the Margaret and Johnny Finch Charitable Trust and Wal-Mart, and generous donations from our members and friends.

Membership in our organization is nearing the 500 mark. Annual membership dues of $15 for individuals and $25 for families includes a subscription to our monthly newsletter and helps with the cost of preserving our heritage for future generations. Dues may be sent to the museum at 903 E. Main St., Portland, IN, 47371.

We again thank the community for all of their interest in history and support of the museum and extend an invitation to visit throughout the year. Watch for announcements of special Christmas activities in late November and December. Also, mark your calendars for the 2007 Heritage Festival scheduled for Oct. 6-7.

Sincerely,

Kay Locker, president, Jay
