Honorary Hoosiers?
Editorial
It's good to know Fort Recovery is still in Ohio.
The Wall Street Journal assures us that's the case.
On Monday, however, The Journal's pages reported something different.
In an op-ed piece by Sen. Joe Lieberman, the independent from Connecticut, and Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, the well-known landmark was placed in Indiana.
The senators were arguing, with some validity, for greater cooperation from the Obama Administration as the senate tries to probe the Fort Hood massacre of last November.
To bolster their case, they turned to the first Congressional oversight investigation in America's history. That was back in 1792 when the Congress wanted to get to the bottom of the massacre of U.S. troops by Indian warriors in the Battle of Wabash, also known as St. Clair's Defeat.
Fair enough. Trouble is, the senators said the battle occurred "near Fort Recovery, Ind."
To its credit, on Thursday The Journal set the record straight with a correction.
"Fort Recovery," The Journal assured its readers, "is located in Ohio."
With so many other problems in the world today, it's nice to know that that's settled.
But just the same, it was nice to have our Buckeye neighbors as honorary Hoosiers, if only for a few days. - J.R.
