By To the editor:-
On Jan. 6, 2004, as Mayor for the city of Portland, I sent a letter of request to the Indiana State Police asking their agency to conduct an investigation regarding the deadly pursuit on July 18, 2003. The end result of this tragedy created allegations of police misconduct and tampering of evidence against individual officers of the Portland Police Department.
This request was made with the full confidence that the state police would conduct an investigation with the highest degree of professionalism, fairness and impartiality to everyone involved.
We believed this investigation would determine the facts of the case and bring forward the truth regarding this tragedy. As mayor I committed to this investigation and stated at the time of the request that we would accept the findings of the state police investigation.
While my heart and prayers go out to all the families involved in this tragedy, we believe in the integrity and impartiality of the investigators of the state police involved in this matter.
After reviewing the reports in detail, we accept the findings and the presentation of the facts of the investigation that there is no evidence of police misconduct and tampering of evidence against the officers accused in the case.
Therefore, as Mayor of Portland and on behalf of Portland Police Chief Robert Sours, we will continue to provide the leadership in moving forward with restoring the confidence and credibility of the police department back to the citizens and community in which they serve.

Mayor of Portland
