Hospital project to top $1 million
Jay County Hospital Board
The Jay County Hospital Board gave the OK this morning to move forward with a $1 million air handler replacement project.
The project, with a cost not to exceed $1,030,057, will include replacing a 30-year-old air handler unit at the hospital, filling underground ducts and looking at increasing efficiency of other systems such as water heaters.
The hospital board agreed to have engineering work down by MSKTD and Associates in December, at which time the cost was estimated at about $1.3 million. Jeff Horn, manager of information systems and support systems, said the project was bid in seven parts and the total cost came in “very decently under expectations.”
Horn said the project would need to be done eventually due to the underground ductwork that was installed when the hospital was built in 1979-80.
“It’s beginning to deteriorate,” Horn said of the ductwork.
Horn said the ducts will be filled to avoid any future collapses.
“It will be filled with a flowable concrete mix,” he said, noting that the ducts are located in the gravel below the foundation.
The replacement was not included in the hospital renovation that was completed in 2009 because the board wanted to only complete what could be supported by income at that time.
“We were able to cashflow it at that point,” said hospital CEO Joe Johnston. “This (air handler phase) would have put us over. We recognized all along it needed to be done.”
In other business this morning, the hospital board:

•Heard the auxiliary report from auxiliary president Marilyn Post. In June, 77 people volunteered 1,223.25 hours.
•Heard the financial report from chief financial officer Don Michael. The hospital had a net income of $163,301 in June.
•Approved a purchase of an upgrade to the ImageNow database at a cost of $12,900. Horn said the upgrade was necessary to handle the increased demands of the scanning software.
•Approved payment of 1,412 checks and disbursements totaling $2,760,052.06.
•Approved payment of a CEO bonus of $8,111.63.
•Approved four appointments and reappointments to the hospital’s active and courtesy staffs.[[In-content Ad]]
