Houck shoots 81 for Red Wolves
Collegiate Check-up
Drew Houck struggled during the early part of the spring season.
Now he’s on a roll.
The 2011 Jay County High School graduate turned in a spring-best score for the second straight tournament, helping the Indiana University East men’s golf team to the championship April 18 at the Cincinnati Christian Spring Invitational.
Houck posted the best score on the front nine for the Red Wolves with a 40 at Miami Whitewater Golf Club. He finished with the second-lowest score on the team with an 81.
IU East shot 329 to earn its first win in a spring tournament since 2009.
Houck’s previous low score of the season for 18 holes came with an 85 on March 30 at the Berea Spring Tee-Off.
Danielle Wellman
Wapahani – 2012
Helped the Grace College Softball team to a doubleheader sweep Monday over St. Francis.
Wellman went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for the Lancers (16-26) in the opening game. She added a walk, a run and an RBI in game two.
The freshman also had a single, two runs and an RBI in an 11-10, nine-inning win Saturday over St. Mary-of-the-Woods.
Jordan McMillan
Jay County – 2011
Turned in a top-five finish for the Ball State University women’s track team at Saturday’s Polytan Invitational hosted by Indiana.
McMillan turned in her best effort in the 100-meter dash, finishing fourth in 12.52 seconds.
She was also sixth with a time of 25.98 in the 200 dash.
Pazia Speed
Jay County - 2010
Played a key roll Monday as the Huntington University softball team racked up 15 hits in an 8-1 victory over Spring Arbor.
Speed finished 2-for-3 as the Foresters (14-14) extended their winning streak to six games. She also scored a pair of runs.
Hannah Moore
South Adams – 2012
Picked up a fourth-place finish for the Huntington University women’s track team at the Spartan Classic hosted by Manchester on Saturday.
Moore crossed the finish line in 5 minutes, 2.79 seconds, to take fourth out of 36 competitors in the 1,500-meter run. She was also 11th in the 800 run in 2:30.84.
The freshman teamed with Brittani Florian, Amanda Henningfield and Gretchen Spahr for 10th in the 4x400 relay in 4:41.4.
Billy Wellman
Jay County – 2009
Was part of a 12-hit effort by the Ball State University baseball team Saturday in a 5-2 victory over Miami.
Wellman smacked a pair of hits for the Cardinals (17-19) and also drove in a run. He had a single, an RBI and a stolen base in Sunday’s 6-5 loss to the Redhawks.
Brandon Reynard
Jay County – 2009
Competed for the Indiana Tech men’s track team Friday and Saturday at the Jesse Owens Classic hosted by Ohio State.
Reynard took seventh in a field of 31 athletes in the 400-meter hurdles. He finished the race in 53.21 seconds.
Jana Beitler
South Adams – 2009
Scored a run on Senior Day for the Goshen College softball team in a 4-3 loss to St. Francis in the second game of a doubleheader.
Beitler, the Maple Leafs’ senior shortstop, smacked a double to center field in the sixth inning. She advanced to third on a single by Morgan Chilton and scored on a double by Melanie Meyer.
Katie Simmons
Jay County – 2012
Ran for the IPFW women’s track team Friday and Saturday at the Dave Rankin Invitational hosted by Purdue.
Simmons finished in the top 10 of both of her races, placing eighth out of 32 runners in the 5,000-meter run in 18 minutes, 25.77 seconds. She was also ninth in 5:06.94 in the 1,500 run.
Sam Heckard
South Adams – 2010
Also ran at the Dave Rankin Invitational for the Bethel College men’s team.
Heckard was 26th in his only race at the meet. He posted a time of 5:02.79 in the 1,500 run.
Brianna Nevil
South Adams – 2012
Came off the bench Saturday to help the Hesston College softball team to a 5-3 victory over Kansas City in the opening game of a doubleheader.
Hesston entered as a pinch hitter in the third inning and drove in a run when she reached base on an error. She also scored a run.
The freshman went 2-for-3 for the Larks (16-17) as they dropped the second game 3-2.[[In-content Ad]]
