Hough, Chargers win Oakland tournament (10/08/05)

Jay County graduate Sara Hough was one of several players to lead the Ancilla women’s volleyball team to victory at the Oakland Community College tournament, which concluded Oct. 1.

Hough was the team leader in digs and aces for the Chargers, who finished 6-1 and are now 21-12 on the season. She racked up 90 digs from her libero position and had 23 aces, 10 more than anyone else on the team.

In the 30-28, 30-17 championship victory over Delta Community College the sophomore totaled 16 digs. She also had 11 in the semifinal win against Genesee Community College.

Hough also had 21 digs and five aces in a loss to Kalamazoo Valley Community College Tuesday and 12 digs and three aces in a 24-30, 30-12, 30-18, 30-25 win over Indiana University Northwest Thursday.

Joscie Kaup

The Syracuse sophomore who graduated from Fort Recovery in 2004 matched her season high in digs as the Orange volleyball team fell to 10th-ranked Notre Dame Sept. 30.

Kaup racked up 18 digs in the 30-17, 30-23, 30-20 loss to the Fighting Irish. She added nine more digs and one as Syracuse bounced back to top DePaul 28-30, 30-18, 30-17, 30-13 Sunday.

Cameron Hummel

The 2002 Jay County graduate managed to keep his team close for a half, but the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology football team fell to a 24-6 defeat to NCAA Division II Trinity Oct. 1.

Hummel led the Engineers (3-2), who held a 3-0 lead and trailed just 10-6 at the half, with 80 yards rushing on 15 carries. He also completed 11 passes for 102 yards.

Adam Foster

The St. Francis freshman and 2005 Jay County graduate posted the top score for the Cougar men’s golf team at Huntington College’s Forester Fall Invitational Sept. 30.

Foster topped the charts for St. Francis, which finished fifth in the seven-team field, as he shot 79 at LaFontaine Golf Club.

He also competed in the Mid-Central Conference championships at Peru’s Rock Hollow Golf Club Monday and Tuesday. He was third on the team and 29th overall, shooting rounds of 85, 84 and 77 for a 54-hole total of 246 as the Cougars finished sixth out of nine teams.

Jill Roughia

The 2005 Jay County graduate was one of three members of the Huntington College women’s cross country team to finish in the top 10 as the Foresters hosted the E. DeWitt Baker Invitational Oct. 1.

Roughia finished eighth overall in 20-minutes, 53 seconds. Huntington was second as a team behind Taylor.

Candace Northam

A 2002 graduate of Jay County, she had a solid week despite the St. Joseph College women’s tennis team finishing with a 1-3 mark.

Northam helped St. Joseph to its only win of the week, which came by a 9-0 score Sunday over Robert Morris. She pounded Geraldine Colorado 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles and teamed with Christie Van Eyk for an 8-0 shutout of Colorado and Julie Dye at No. 2 doubles.

The senior accounted for her team’s only win in an 8-1 loss to Kentucky Wesleyan Sept. 30. She defeated Elizabeth Bullock 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

Northam nearly pulled off another win in an 8-1 loss to Bellermine Oct. 1, but dropped 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), (12-10) to Jade Best. She also lost as St. Joseph fell 8-1 to Marian Tuesday.

Ben Freeman

The 2005 Jay County graduate has joined the Ohio Northern men’s golf team, scoring for the Polar Bears at the Mount Union Invitational Sept. 25 and 26.

Freeman shot 90 in the first round at Tannenhauf Golf Course, but came back for a 78 in the second at Alliance Country Club. His 168 total put him in 66th overall as Ohio Northern placed ninth at the 15-team event.

Steph Welch

A 2002 graduate of South Adams, Welch ran for the Bluffton University women’s cross country team at the Earlham Invitational Oct. 1

Welch placed third on the team and 33rd overall at the 10-team meet with a time of 22-minutes, 16 seconds. The Beavers finished in seventh place.[[In-content Ad]]
