Hubbard new Dunkirk mayor (11/5/03)
Defeats incumbent Johnson
Sam Hubbard will be the new mayor of Dunkirk.
Hubbard, who has headed the Dunkirk Area Chamber of Commerce, knocked Democratic incumbent Tom Johnson out of the mayor’s seat Tuesday with 54 percent of the vote.
The Republican challenger won handily in both of Dunkirk’s precincts, defeating Johnson 124-103 in Dunkirk 1 and 152-112 in Dunkirk 3.
“This is a double celebration because tomorrow is my birthday,” said Hubbard, who turned 74 today.
Johnson was gracious in defeat.
“I want to thank my supporters and congratulate Sam. He worked hard, and it was a clean race,” he said Tuesday night.
Hubbard said he was surprised by the large voter turnout and his margin of victory.
“Another good thing for us is that Republican Jim Doughty got in too,” said Hubbard. “This will put three Republicans on the city council, which is kind of unusual for Dunkirk. I talked to Bruce Hosier (who won Portland’s mayoral contest Tuesday) a couple of months ago, and I feel the two of us can work together on a variety of issues.”
Doughty defeated incumbent Democrat Jean Esslinger in the District 2 race for city council, receiving 58 percent of the vote. Doughty topped Esslinger 125-104 in Dunkirk 1 and 156-103 in Dunkirk 3.
“I’m so excited. I’m ready to go to work,” Doughty said Tuesday night. “ I’m looking forward to it with Sam. We need to start running the town more like a business.”
In the other contested race for Dunkirk City Council, incumbent Democrat Dan Watson easily fended off a challenge from Republican Carl Southworth in the at-large race.
In terms of percentages, Watson was the biggest vote-getter of all those facing competition. He received 67 percent of the total vote, defeating Southworth 150-76 in Dunkirk 1 and 173-86 in Dunkirk 3.
Doughty and Watson will be joined on the council in 2004 by three candidates who faced no opposition. Democrat Larry J. Smith was unopposed for the District 1 seat. Democrat Craig Faulkner was unopposed for the District 3 seat. And Republican Connie Whetsel was unopposed for the District 4 seat.
Incumbent Democrat clerk-treasurer Jane Ann Kesler was also unopposed in the general election.
