Hummel gives Rose-Hulman winning year (11/11/06)

Collegiate Check-up

Cameron Hummel closed his career in much the same way he opened it - leading the Engineers to victory.

Hummel, a Jay County graduate, started for the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology football team as a freshman, and pushed the squad to a 34-16 victory in the first start of his career in September of 2002. He closed out his career Nov. 4, putting up the same number of points for a 34-3 win over Manchester.

The senior completed 15-of-27 passes for 255 yards, and rushed nine times for 25. He broke the game wide open with a pair of touchdown passes in a span of less than three minutes - a 25-yarder to Justin Meade with 2:27 to go in the third quarter and a 70-yard bomb to Thomas Reives 10 seconds into the fourth.

The victory pushed Rose-Hulman's record to 6-4, marking the first winning season since 1995.

Before Hummel's arrival, The Engineers endured seven straight losing campaigns. As a starter for most of his four seasons, the former Patriot led them to 5-5 records in 2003 and 2005 before winning three of the last four games this year for a 20-20 career record.

Hummel's name is in the record book several times as he ranks third in school history in three major passing categories. He is third in passing yards (4,417), passing touchdowns (27) and passing attempts (782). He is also ninth in total rushing yards with 1,787, and added 13 career rushing touchdowns.

Showed off his long-distance skills in his Grenadier debut.

After not playing in the IU-Southeast men's basketball team's opening loss to IU-South Bend, Rigby racked up 14 points Wednesday in a 116-71 victory over Knoxville College.

Rigby, who helped lead the Jay County Patriots to the state championship game and was the winner of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award, made four of his five 3-point attempts in his first collegiate action. He also buried a pair of free throws as he finished second on the team in scoring.

The freshman added five rebounds, three assists and a steal in the win.

She also had 21 digs, three aces and two assists in a defeat Nov. 3 against St. John's.

The senior was also second in the 50 freestyle relay in 22.06 at the DePauw meet, and third in the 100 butterfly in 53.90. He was fifth in the 500 freestyle against Rose-Hulman with a time of 5:22.46.
