IDEM issues permit (05/29/07)

Jay County Commissioners

By By JACK RONALD-

A construction permit has been granted by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management for a sewer line project to Poet Biorefining and nearby properties southwest of Portland.

Jay County Commissioners learned of IDEM's approval this morning.

Portland wastewater treatment plant superintendent Bob Brelsford met with commissioners this morning to review the project, saying he wants to make sure it has been designed with enough capacity to handle production growth at the ethanol plant now under construction.

"You don't want to have to change pumps in a couple of years," Brelsford said.

"Commonwealth (Engineering) should know all of that," said commissioner Milo Miller Jr.

The project - which carries a price tag of almost $260,000 - will be done by LICA Construction Corp., Linn Grove. It will extend a sewer line along county road 150 South to Blaine Pike, where a lift station will carry sewage to the Portland wastewater treatment plant.

Brelsford said today it's his understanding that Poet will be using water from the Meshberger Brothers Stone Corp. quarry in its production process.

That water will have to be filtered to be used in the making of ethanol, and the byproduct from the filtering will be disposed of via the wastewater treatment plant.

Acting as the county drainage board, the commissioners approved financing of the purchase of a $92,972 Case excavator through First Financial Bank, Dunkirk.

First Financial quoted an interest rate of between 4.55 and 4.67 percent, which was the lowest rate quoted.

County surveyor Brad Daniels said this morning that tile work near the intersection of Ind. 26 and Ind. 67 had been completed to relieve flooding problems near the curve on Ind. 67.

In other business, the commissioners:

•Signed a LifeStream Services Inc. grant application to the Indiana Department of Transportation for continuation of LifeStream's local New InterUrban transportation program. Under the grant being sought, the program would also be expanded to include Grant County.

The federal funds involved total $544,442, with the counties who receive the service combining to match that amount.

•Received a letter from Andy Miller, director of the Indiana Department of Agriculture, and John Clark, director of the Office of Energy and Defense Development, citing a recent editorial in The Commercial Review on the county's potential future in alternative fuels and offering technical assistance.[[In-content Ad]]
