FRHS girls basketball
VERSAILLES, Ohio — They played better, but the result was the same.
After a difficult outing at Delphos St. John’s Thursday, the Fort Recovery girls basketball team came ready to play Saturday only to fall 60-52 in overtime to the Versailles Tigers. It was the third loss in the last four games for the Indians, with all three of those defeats coming against Midwest Athletic Conference opponents.
Fort Recovery (12-5, 3-4 MAC) led by four points after a pair of Vicki Roessner free throws with 16 seconds to go, but Lynette Stauffer cut the Tiger deficit back to two with 10 seconds left. Versailles’ Stacey Reed came up with a steal on the ensuing Indian possession and hit a pair of free throws with five seconds left to tie it.
There was still a chance for the Tribe to win in regulation, but Holly Stein missed the front end of a one-and-one try with one second remaining. The Tigers (13-5, 6-2 MAC) went on to score the first seven points of the overtime on the way to the win.
Justine Raterman led Versailles past the visiting Indians with 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting. She hit all nine of her free throw attempts as the Tigers outscored Fort Recovery 22-9 from the line. She also had 12 rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
Stauffer finished with 12 points and three assists.
Stein and Sara Fortkamp paced the Indians with 10 points apiece as Fort Recovery shot just 33 percent from the field compared to 49 percent for the Tigers. Tiff Gaerke added eight points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Stein had five points, and Roessner notched five assists.
