Indian girls seeded No. 1 in sectional (01/21/08)

FRHS girls basketball

FORT RECOVERY - Conventional wisdom said this would be a step-back season for the Indians. Apparently no one told the team.

Fort Recovery lost a mammoth 2007 senior class, which led the team to an 11-0 start and No. 1 girls basketball ranking in Division IV. There are no seniors on this year's squad, but that has not slowed the Indians down much.

They earned the No. 1 seed in the Division IV sectional tournament, which will be hosted by Wapakoneta, a day after knocking off the Redskins 58-52 for their sixth straight win.

Fort Recovery (11-4) gets a bye through the first round and will play in the sectional championship game Saturday, Feb. 16, at 6:15 p.m. It will meet the winner of a semifinal game Tuesday, Feb. 12, between New Knoxville (10-6) and Marion Local (5-8).

The other half of the bracket has Minster (9-7) taking on Waynesfield-Goshen (5-11) and No. 2 seed New Bremen (11-5) against Lima Perry. Those games will be Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 6:15 and 8 p.m. respectively, and the winners will meet in the sectional championship game Saturday, Feb. 16, at 8 p.m.

The Indians, who have beaten both New Knoxville (54-46) and Marion Local (52-46) this season, built a 13-point, first-half lead Saturday against Wapakoneta. However, the Redskins didn't go down easily.

Wapakoneta closed to within two in the third quarter, fell behind by nine again and then made a late run. It put together an 8-0 run, culminating in a pair of foul shots by Christy Steinke to cut the Indians' advantage to 52-51.

Fort Recovery, however, would not relinquish the lead.

Joanna Snyder split a pair of free throws, and the Indians forced a turnover. She split two more foul shots, and the Tribe defense came up with a turnover again. Earning another trip to the line, Snyder converted both shots to end the Redskins' comeback effort.

Anne Koesters and Snyder paced the Indians, who are trying for their seventh season of 15 wins or more since 2000.

Koesters shot 9-of-13 (69 percent) from the field and made all of her four free throws for 22 points. She also had six rebounds and four steals, both team highs.

Snyder scored 18 points and dished out six assists, and Nicole Pottkotter joined them in double figures with 11 points to go along with six rebounds.

Fort Recovery shot 53 percent as a team in the second half while limiting the Redskins to just 7-of-25 (28 percent).

Four Wapakoneta players scored in double figures, with Steinke and Emily Stevely each totaling 13 points. Devon Golden had 12 points, and Heidi Schlegel scored 11. Schlegel had 10 rebounds for a double-double, and Golden dished out seven assists.

The Indians dominated from the start, improving to 12-3 with a 47-28 victory over Wapakoneta.

Holly Brunswick paced the Tribe, which led 14-6 after the first quarter and allowed just three points in the second, with 13 points and six rebounds. Kendra Brunswick had eight points and five steals.

Emma Sawmiller had eight points for the Redskins. Emily Lowry added six points and nine rebounds.[[In-content Ad]]
