Indian runners take 4th at MAC meet (10/13/06)

COLDWATER, Ohio - Mindy Vogel was one of just two runners to break the Minster stronghold, finishing third for the Fort Recovery girls cross country team Thursday at the Midwest Athletic Conference Championships.
Vogel's effort led a fourth-place team finish with 130 points. Division III No. 1 Minster was first in the nine-team field with 20 points, Division III No. 4 Versailles took second with 57 and Coldwater was third with 117.
Coldwater won the boys title with 47 points, just ahead of Minster (53). Fort Recovery does not have a boys team this season.
Minster, the defending state champion, dominated the girls race, with only Vogel and Erin Calvelage of St. John's splitting up its top five runners. Vogel narrowly missed a runner-up finish, crossing the line two seconds behind Katie Dahlinghaus of Minster in 19-minutes, 28 seconds.
Bernadette Burke of Minster won the 5K race in 19:18.
Brigitte Sherman of Minster followed Vogel in 19:40 with Calvelage (19:48) in fifth, Lei Bornhorst (19:50) and Jessica Albers (19:51) of Minster in sixth and seventh.
Tina Roessner was second for the Tribe, placing 23rd one second ahead of Coldwater's Ashley Kanney in 20:50. Sam Bihn followed in 36th with a time of 21:54.
Freshman Amber Heitkamp put up a career-best time for the second straight meet to finish 44th out of 119 runners. She improved by 17 seconds over last week's time at the Coldwater Lions Invitational with a time of 22:09.
Sam Staugler rounded out the Tribe team score as she placed 81st in 24:21.
Also running for the Tribe were Melissa Tobe (97th) with a season-best time of 25:35 and Kelsey Brockman (108th - 26:58).
Junior high
Fort Recovery's boys showed off what they hope will be a bright future to the program, missing the MAC title by just a single point.
The Tribe finished second in the six-team field with a score of 56, just one back of champion Versailles and six ahead of Minster.
The girls team was fourth out of six teams with 111 points, behind champion Minster (18), Versailles (68) and Coldwater (73).
Ryan Heitkamp led the Indian boys, who had four runners in the top 12, by finishing fifth in 12:25. Champion Versailles put five runners in the top 15 as the top two teams went back-and-forth from seventh through 13th.
Caleb Heitkamp took eighth out of 43 runners for Fort Recovery in 12:31, one second behind Brad Murphy of Versailles and one second ahead of the Tigers' Aaron Eilerman. Alan Vogel (10th - 12:33) was just one second behind Eilerman and two ahead of Versailles' Eric Pothast.
Mathias Koester finished 12th for the Indians in 12:44, one-half second ahead of Michael Wenig of Versailles.
Derek Rammel finished off the Fort Recovery team score in 21st with a time of 13:24.
Alexis Sutter led the Indian girls in 17th place out of 105 runners with a time of 13:42.
Nicole Heitkamp followed in 22nd at 13:54, and Claire Wendel was 27th in 13:58.
