Indian softball loses close pair (04/11/05)

The close games just keep biting the Fort Recovery softball team. The Indians slipped to 2-5 Saturday, falling to the host Van Wert Cougars 3-1 and 4-3 in double-header action. Four of their five losses this season have come by just one run.
The Tribe never led in the first game, giving up a run in the opening inning and scoring once in the third for a tie. But, Van Wert scored twice in the bottom of the fifth en route to the win.
Alyssa Tobe took the defeat, allowing three runs — one earned — on five hits. She struck out seven and walked one.
Kristen Schwieterman went 2-for-3 in the contest with an RBI. Renee Evers also had two hits, and Megan Wenning scored the Indians’ lone run.
The Tribe jumped on top with a pair of runs in the opening inning of game two, but the Cougars scored three times in the third and never trailed again.
Jill Wehrkamp was the losing pitcher in the second game, going 41/3 innings and giving up two runs on three hits. She walked six and struck out one.
Kelsie Will singled and walked twice, driving in a run and scoring once.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team fared slightly better as it took on Van Wert at home. It survived for a 2-1 win in the opener before being shut out 7-0 in game two of the double-header.
Beth May pitched the Indians (3-2) to victory in the opener, giving up just one unearned run on one hit in five innings. She struck out two and walked three in improving to 3-1 on the year.
Jodi Tobe had the big hit with a double, one of just three hits for the Tribe in the contest. She also stole a base and scored one run.
In game two the Indians managed just one hit, a single by Kyla Metzger. Van Wert scored two runs in the first inning, and posted five in the fourth.
Kim Willmann suffered the loss as she allowed seven runs — four earned — in four innings. She walked five and struck out one.[[In-content Ad]]
