FORT RECOVERY - It's amazing what a handful of extra bodies can do.
Winning dual meets was tough for the Fort Recovery track teams last year. It was not because of a lack of talent, just a lack of numbers.
With increased participation this season, the Indians finished off a perfect opening week Friday with a couple of wins over the visiting New Knoxville Rangers.
Michael Trobridge racked up three individual wins to lead the boys team to a 73-45 victory, and Holly Stein, Mindy Vogel and Sylvia Schwieterman all won two events as part of the girls team's 82-37 triumph.
Both squads also defeated Parkway and the host Knights Tuesday at Crestview.
"It was nice because we had some good competition in some of these races. We have some young kids here who haven't had a whole lot of practice in meets and this ... is kind of an elevated practice for them," said FRHS assistant coach Jason Grieshop, whose Indians will host the Fort Recovery Invitational in two weeks. "It makes them go out there against real competition and see what they've got. We got to see some improvement out of kids and see some surprises ..."
Schwieterman picked up the first double-win of her career as she was in control in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles. The freshman won the 100 hurdles in 19.1 seconds, then topped teammates Emily Bauer and Lindsay Fullenkamp by more than four seconds in 57.7 to win the 300.
Trobridge took top sprinting honors for the boys, and walked away with victories in all of his events.
The junior dominated the 100 dash from the outside, blowing away the field from lane eight in 12 seconds flat. Teammates Perry Hull (12.7) and Matt Braun (12.8) were second and third respectively.
Trobridge also won the 200 dash in 25.2, and placed first in with a leap of 17 feet, 91/4 inches in the long jump.
"Michael had a wonderful day ... He had four first-place finishes today," said Grieshop, as Trobridge also teamed with Hull, Braun and Matt Vagedes for a time of 49.6 in the uncontested 4x100 relay. "It was a nice showing for Michael.
"He's shown some real signs of improvement. ... All of our sprinters and our 4x100 relay are working hard and showing improvement."
Vogel won each of her individual events as well, cutting nearly four seconds off her 800 run time to win in 2-minutes, 30.4 seconds.
She was followed by four more Indians as Beth May (1:07.4) was second with Amber Heitkamp third, Anne Koesters fourth and Beth Muhlenkamp fifth.
Vogel was also first in the 800 run at 2:30.4, and joined Heitkamp, Sam Bihn and Tina Roessner to win an uncontested 4x800 relay in 11:15.4.
Stein continued her perfection in the throwing events, although she got a strong challenge from Natasha Fullenkamp of the Rangers.
She had her best throw of the year - in addition to Tuesday's meet the girls also placed fourth March 31 at the Versailles Invitational - in the discus in 116 feet, 5 inches. Fullenkamp's fourth and final throw came in at 116 feet, 3 inches, and Fort Recovery freshman Jessica Link was third at 96 feet, 6 inches.
Stein easily won the shot put at 35 feet, 10 inches. Tribe sophomore Anne Koesters was second at 30 feet, 7.5 inches.
"She did well. She threw her best discus throw of the year," said Grieshop of Stein. "Her shot wasn't quite as far as her best, but overall she had a real nice day. She'll never say that because she wants her best all the time, but it was good."
Tina Roessner took the 3,200 run in 6:07.10 with teammate Sam Bihn in second place, and May placed won the 200 dash in 29.9. Shane Stein held off New Knoxville's Brad Phillips to win the boys 400 dash in 58.5 seconds.
Wes Kahlig scored a sizable win in the 800 run, topping teammate Eric Lamm by more than six seconds in 2:21.
"Wes Kahlig took off and ran a real nice 800 today," said Grieshop. "This is his first year in track ... if he wants to continue that he's got a chance to keep working at it and maybe get somewhere this year in that event.
"It's good to see that type of step that he made."
Adding uncontested victories were Rachel Tobe in the girls pole vault and high jump, Bihn in the girls 3,200 run and Vagedes in the boys pole vault.[[In-content Ad]]
