Indians drop 8th straight game (01/31/04)

NEW BREMEN — It was another close game, but another loss for the Fort Recovery boys basketball team just the same.

The Indians have lost some close games in what is now an eight-game losing streak, and Friday night’s contest was nothing different. The Tribe played the New Bremen Cardinals nearly even in every facet of the game but still came away on the short end of a 50-47 final score.

Along with the 3-point loss to New Bremen, the current skid has included a 41-40 defeat at Marion Local and a 55-51 overtime loss at home to St. Henry.

Fort Recovery (3-10, 1-4 Midwest Athletic Conference) had a four-point lead after one quarter, but allowed 19 Cardinal points in the second. New Bremen (10-4, 3-2 MAC) took the 27-25 lead into halftime and pushed the advantage to 39-32 after three periods.

The Indians made a comeback, but still fell three points short.

John Bihn finished as the lone Fort Recovery player in double figures. He came off the bench to score 12 points and grab eight rebounds as he returned from a two-game suspension for violation of team rules.

He also had four steals and three assists.

Dusty Tobe was next with eight points and six rebounds. Greg Faller, Tyler Wuebker and C. J. Tobe contributed three assists apiece.

The Tribe finished 6-of-17 from the free throw line, but New Bremen was almost as bad from the stripe at 6-of-14. Both squads shot less than 40 percent from the field — 39.6 percent for Fort Recovery and 36 percent for New Bremen — but the Cardinals made up for it in rebounding and turnovers.

The home team grabbed a 40-33 advantage on the glass, which included 14 offensive rebounds. They also had three fewer turnovers than the Indians.

New Bremen parlayed those advantages into 11 extra field goal attempts, which turned out to be just enough to survive with a win.

Scott Schmiesing paced the Cardinals in scoring and rebounding with 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. He also finished with three steals

Troy Lammers and Justin Brown added 12 points apiece. Lammers also had three steals and two assists, and Chris Schnelle grabbed seven rebounds.

Fort Recovery will try to end the losing streak tonight when it travels to Wayne Trace at 6:30 p.m.

Junior varsity

The Fort Recovery junior varsity team watched a halftime lead slip away in a 40-34 defeat Friday.

The Indians held a 21-13 lead at the half but all of it disappeared in the third quarter. New Bremen outscored them 18-6 in the period and went on to the victory.

Mark Willman topped the list of scorers for Fort Recovery with eight points, and Seth Bihn finished with six. Tony Diller, Tyler Thobe and Jason VanSkyock each had five rebounds, and Stan Roessner dished out four assists.

Brian Schwartz had a game-high 14 points to lead the Cardinals, and Justin Dabbelt had eight. Scott McCollum finished with seven rebounds and two steals.[[In-content Ad]]
